The Role

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

A Masters in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Ocean Engineering or similar and/or professional registration is preferred. Ideal candidate will have extensive naval nuclear background with experience in research, design, project management, and overall general problem solving associated with complex designs including shielding design, reactor compartment containment design, and other large naval nuclear propulsion plant structures, with particular experience in the following:

  • Knowledge of large surface combatant ship structural fabrication, welding and NDT requirements, and the manufacturing processes currently used by the construction value stream.

  • Experience with advanced finite element, shock, and vibration analysis techniques.

  • Experience interfacing with NAVSEA and Naval Nuclear Labs.

  • Experience in new ship design process including interfacing with Naval Architecture and non-nuclear structures.

  • Proven ability to train, mentor, administrate, and coordinate work of engineers within the structural discipline including interfacing with other disciplines.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience; Master's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
