Job Duties

Position: On-call Adult Education Substitute Instructor

Salary Range: $25-$27 per hour

Schedule: On-call, hourly

ABOUT PROGRAM

The Adult Education Program at Neighborhood House provides adult learners with ongoing educational support and learning opportunities. This includes classes in citizenship, digital literacy, and English skills for adults.

We work with all learners to acquire the skills necessary to improve employment potential, continue higher education, and strengthen connections to the community — all significant steps on the path toward independence, stability and a bright future.

POSITION SUMMARY

Prepare and teach Adult Education classes or support intakes when needed and on short/on-call notice.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach English Language Learner (ELL), GED, or computer, or other classes as assigned.

  • Collaborate with teachers and volunteers to prepare class materials and lesson plans.

  • Report lesson progress to the instructor.

  • Keep a thorough and confidential record of activities and maintain the confidentiality of all program participants in accordance with data privacy, ethical laws, standards, and policies.

  • Perform all work following Neighborhood House policies and procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Experience

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills in English

  • Proficient computer skills (including Microsoft Office, Internet, and e-mail)

  • Demonstrated initiative and organizational skills

  • Ability to balance multiple projects and priorities

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-energy environment

  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with people of diverse ethnic, economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds

Desired Experience/Education

  • Bachelor’s degree (ESL, education, languages, or related field)

  • 1-3 years of experience working with immigrants and refugees

  • Lesson planning experience

Data and Evaluation

  • Ensure timely and accurate attendance reporting to instructors.

  • Ensure timely and accurate data entry into SiD if subbing for intakes.

Communication

  • Respond to substitute requests via email or phone.

  • Maintain communication with instructors and/or supervisors regarding substitute jobs.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Actively support and champion the mission and programs of Neighborhood House.

  • Actively support Neighborhood House’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and radical hospitality. Conduct all activities with a high degree of cultural competency.

  • Maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with colleagues, participants, donors, board members, volunteers, and community partners.

  • Consistently uphold Neighborhood House policies, procedures, and confidentiality protocols.

  • When representing Neighborhood House to internal and external audiences, articulate the organization’s desired image and position.

  • Contribute to building a cohesive, respectful, responsive, and productive staff environment that demonstrates our values and mission.

  • Actively participate in required meetings, trainings, and other events as requested.

WORK LOCATION

This role is based in St. Paul, MN, with programming taking place at Neighborhood House sites and occasional online opportunities.

The on-call schedule may be in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings from Monday to Friday.
