Job Description

Job Description: Insight Global is seeking a Principal Structural Engineer (Transmission) for an engineering and utility consulting client. This individual will act as the senior technical authority for transmission structure and foundation engineering. Leading the analysis, design, evaluation, and enhancement of steel poles, wood poles, lattice towers, guyed structures, and complex foundation systems. The ideal candidate will bring experience serving as Engineer of Record and possess expertise in historical and modern structural materials. This includes legacy wood systems, historic steel fabrication methods, high-strength steels, composites, and foundation technologies. This engineer will work closely with clients, PMs, and technical teams to deliver transmission infrastructure solutions while mentoring engineers. Strong communication skills, leadership capabilities, and a passion for shaping engineering standards and developing talent are critical for success in this role. The position offers significant technical influence, opportunities for industry recognition through conference presentations and publications, and the ability to help build and grow a highly respected transmission engineering practice.

Day-to-Day:

  • Lead analysis and design of transmission poles, towers, and specialty structures
  • Perform structural evaluations for upgrades, reconductoring, resiliency, and hardening projects
  • Design and review transmission foundation systems
  • Conduct loading analyses utilizing transmission industry standards
  • Serve as Engineer of Record across multiple states
  • Review and approve engineering packages prepared by team members
  • Establish and enforce QA/QC procedures and technical standards
  • Mentor senior engineers, engineers, and engineering associates
  • Support project planning, scope development, and client engagement activities
  • Participate in technical reviews and project strategy discussions
  • Present engineering solutions to clients and stakeholders
  • Provide field support and resolve construction-related engineering issues Contribute to industry leadership through conferences, publications, and technical presentation

Skills and Requirements

Must-Haves:

  • Active Structural Engineer (SE) License in California and Illinois (REQUIRED, most important qualification)

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering

  • 12-15+ years of structural engineering experience

  • Experience serving as Engineer of Record

  • Strong transmission utility experience involving:

  • Steel poles

  • Wood poles

  • Lattice towers

  • Transmission foundations

  • Limited transmission experience can be acceptable if candidate has extensive structural steel and foundation design expertise

  • Deep understanding of structural materials, including:

  • Legacy wood species and deterioration patterns

  • Historic and modern steel grades

  • Concrete foundation systems

  • Composite materials

  • Transmission structure design and analysis experience

  • Proficiency with:

  • PLS-CADD

  • PLS-POLE

  • TOWER

  • L-Pile

  • MFAD

  • Strong knowledge of:

  • ASCE 48

  • ASCE 10

  • ASCE 7

  • ASCE 11

  • NESC

  • TIA-222

  • Foundation design experience including drilled shafts, spread footings, anchors, and micropiles Excellent communication, presentation, and mentorship skills Plusses:

  • SE licensure in additional states

  • Experience with wildfire hardening and grid resiliency programs

  • Familiarity with ASCE 113 (Substation Structures)

  • Experience presenting at industry conferences (IEEE, ASCE, etc.) Published technical papers or white papers
