General Description

The Compliance Officer supports the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) Compliance Programs for Banco Popular de Puerto Rico (BPPR) and Popular Bank (PB). This developmental role is ideal for a candidate with strong analytical, research and writing skills who is interested in learning how commercial lending and community development activities are evaluated under CRA requirements.

The position assists in the review of commercial loans, services, donations, and community initiatives; supports data quality and reporting processes, and partners with business and support units to ensure accurate documentation and examination readiness. Prior CRA experience is not required. Candidates with exposure to commercial lending, credit analysis, banking operations compliance, or related analytical functions are encouraged to apply.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyze commercial lending and community development activities to support CRA eligibility determinations.

  • Review loan documentation and supporting information to assess purpose, beneficiaries, geographic impact, and community development outcomes.

  • Gather, organize, and analyze information from multiple sources, identifying gaps or inconsistencies requiring follow up.

  • Prepare clear and well-supported analyses, workpapers, narratives, and reports.

  • Learn and apply CRA community development concepts, regulatory guidance and internal procedures.

  • Perform geographic research, mapping, and data validation activities.

  • Support management reporting, quality control reviews, audits, and regulatory examinations.

  • Maintain required CRA records, public file documentation, assessment area information, and branch-related CRA documentation.

  • Collaborate with lending, credit, finance, treasury, legal, community affairs, and other business units to obtain and validate information.

  • Contribute to process improvements that enhance data integrity, operational efficiency, and examination readiness.

  • Participate in training, special projects, and other assigned responsibilities.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Accounting, Compliance, or a related field.

Experience

  • Experience in banking, lending, credit, compliance, audit, finance, operations, or another analytical business function.

  • Exposure to commercial lending, loan documentation, credit analysis, or banking operations is preferred.

  • Prior CRA experience is helpful but not required.

Other Qualifications

  • Strong analytical, research, problem-solving skills, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to analyze information, identify data gaps, and draw supportable conclusions.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to accurate documentation.

  • Learning agility and ability to quickly acquire regulatory and technical knowledge.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborate effectively across business functions.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Experience with data analysis, reporting, mapping, or compliance-related systems is a plus.
