Description

Controller

Location: On-site

Our client is seeking a hands-on, strategic Controller to lead the financial operations of a growing multi-company construction organization. This is a high-impact opportunity for an accounting leader who enjoys being close to the day-to-day while also helping shape the long-term financial direction of the business.

This role offers the best of both worlds: meaningful involvement in core accounting operations and the ability to influence processes, controls, reporting, and financial strategy as the company continues to scale.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the day-to-day financial operations across a multi-entity business

  • Conduct daily and monthly bank reconciliations along with other monthly balance sheet reconciliations

  • Review weekly payroll and process one smaller company payroll each week

  • Oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable, including providing weekly AP budgets

  • Manage the general ledger, including preparation and posting of journal entries

  • Calculate and remit 401(k) deferrals weekly

  • Oversee WIP job cost tracking and analysis

  • Monitor, manage, and forecast company cash flow

  • Partner with the Accounting Manager to support month-end close

  • Continuously evaluate and improve financial policies, procedures, and internal controls

  • Lead year-end accounting activities and prepare schedules for external auditors

  • Supervise, mentor, and motivate payroll and accounting staff as the business grows

  • Ensure accurate and timely submission of union reporting and dues

Why This Role Stands Out:

  • Opportunity to make a visible impact in a growing, multi-company environment

  • Blend of hands-on leadership and strategic influence

  • Key role in strengthening processes, controls, and financial infrastructure

  • Chance to lead and develop a team as the organization scales

If you’re a proactive accounting leader who understands the pace of a construction/job cost environment and wants a seat at the table while still staying connected to the numbers, we’d love to connect.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field

  • Prior experience in a Controller or senior-level accounting leadership role

  • Background in job cost accounting and/or the construction industry strongly preferred

  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, payroll, and cash management

  • Experience improving processes and helping shape accounting policies and procedures

  • Strong communication skills with a practical, solutions-oriented approach

  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability and a willingness to roll up your sleeves
