Full job description
Position: Mortgage Underwriter
As a Mortgage Loan Underwriter at High Point Federal Credit Union, you will evaluate mortgage loan applications and make sound lending decisions that balance member service with responsible risk management. This position reviews creditworthiness, income, assets, collateral, property value, repayment ability, and supporting mortgage documentation while applying underwriting standards and ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and Credit Union policies. You will work closely with Member Service, Loan Operations, and Lending staff to provide timely, consistent lending decisions and support the continued development of mortgage lending knowledge throughout the Credit Union.

Your purpose:

Evaluate mortgage loan applications and make sound lending decisions within established lending authority while balancing member service and responsible risk management.

Analyze credit, income, assets, collateral, and supporting documentation to determine creditworthiness and repayment ability.

Review loan files for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with Credit Union policies and regulatory requirements.

Communicate underwriting decisions, conditions, and documentation requirements while partnering with Lending and Loan Operations teams to ensure an efficient lending process.

Manage mortgage pipeline activity and meet established service level expectations.

Serve as a mortgage lending resource by educating and supporting Member Service, Lending, and Loan Operations staff on underwriting decisions, documentation requirements, and lending policies.

Provide backup support for consumer loan underwriting as needed.

Support continuous improvement through process enhancements, policy updates, staff training, and ongoing professional development.
We are looking for:

High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree in Business, Finance, or a related field preferred.

Three (3) years of mortgage underwriting experience, including lending authority. Secondary market experience preferred.

Strong analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain lending decisions clearly and professionally.

Experience with loan origination systems and other financial services software.

Willingness to cross-train and support consumer lending functions as needed.

Schedule / Location:

38 hrs-40 per week, Monday through Friday.

This position is onsite located in Olean, NY. Local travel is necessary based on business need.

The expected pay range for this position is $24-$32 per hour. The actual salary will be determined based on experience and other-job related factors, consistent with applicable law. This salary range only reflects base wages and does not include benefits or other types of compensation. Salary bands are purposefully wide ranging to encompass the different factors considered in determining where a candidate falls in the range, including but not limited to, seniority, performance, experience, education, and any other legitimate, non-discriminatory factor permitted by law.
