Minimum qualifications:

Master's degree in Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

15 years of experience building database systems and delivering them in production.

10 years of experience with data platforms, systems engineering, and cloud infrastructure.
Preferred qualifications:

Experience with open-source databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL.

Expertise in database systems engineering, prioritizing systems over AI model development.

Familiarity with database internals like Query Processing, Transaction Management, and Storage.

Product sensibility and the ability to advocate for key product innovations.
About the job
As a Principal Engineer, you will serve as the technical lead for the Database Migration and Modernization (M&M) portfolio. This is a senior systems-focused engineering role requiring deep expertise in database systems and cloud infrastructure. You will drive the technical direction across the M&M portfolio, ensuring Google remains at the forefront of database modernization. You will utilize cross-organizational influence and leadership capabilities to drive initiatives across multiple product lines.You will lead the technical direction for the global M&M product portfolio. You will drive cross-organizational and multi-product portfolio initiatives as a technical leader. You will inspire a highly technical team of subject matter experts and industry influencers.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
US: $307000 - $427000 (USD) + 30% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities

Develop and own the technical roadmap for the M&M portfolio, identifying key innovation opportunities.

Drive the overall architecture and design of key modernization and migration components.

Work with product management to ensure M&M investments align with Google Data Cloud goals.

Engage with external customers to understand complex modernization needs and deliver impact.
