Full job description

Description We are looking for an accomplished accounting executive to direct core financial operations for a growing credit union in Newport News, Virginia. This leader will guide financial reporting, governance, and compliance efforts while serving as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, auditors, regulators, and the Board. The role requires deep technical accounting expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to strengthen processes, controls, and team performance in a complex financial environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct enterprise accounting activities, including ledger management, close cycles, account analysis, payables oversight, and timely delivery of internal and external financial reports.

  • Prepare and review financial statements and required regulatory filings, including NCUA 5300 Call Reports, with close attention to accuracy, completeness, and compliance.

  • Lead the allowance for credit losses framework by overseeing methodologies, governance, supporting documentation, validation activities, and responses to audits or regulatory reviews.

  • Manage accounting and consolidation activities across subsidiaries, CUSOs, and other affiliated entities, ensuring consistent treatment of intercompany transactions.

  • Strengthen the internal control environment through policy oversight, process refinement, automation initiatives, and improvements to accounting systems and workflows.

  • Provide senior-level guidance on U.S. GAAP, accounting policy interpretation, and the treatment of complex or unusual financial transactions.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors, the Supervisory Committee, and regulatory examiners during audits, exams, and reporting reviews.

  • Oversee tax-related obligations and other regulatory compliance requirements applicable to the organization and its related entities.

  • Build and develop a high-performing accounting function through coaching, succession planning, and cross-training that supports operational continuity and growth. Requirements • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline required; an advanced degree is preferred.

  • Active CPA designation is required.

  • At least 10 years of progressive accounting experience within a financial institution environment.

  • A minimum of 5 years in a controller or senior accounting leadership capacity.

  • Strong command of U.S. GAAP, NCUA reporting, financial institution accounting, and regulatory compliance standards.

  • Demonstrated experience with consolidations, intercompany accounting, and oversight of subsidiaries or affiliated entities.

  • Proven background in internal controls, month-end close, financial reporting, and budget-related processes.

  • Experience supporting a financial institution of $10B+ in assets and operating under heightened regulatory expectations is strongly preferred.
