The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

Role Purpose

Corning is seeking a Process Engineering Intern to join our team in Canton, New York for Summer 2027. This full-time, onsite internship offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of advanced materials, manufacturing, and process innovation.

As a Process Engineering Intern, you will work directly with experienced engineers and plant teams to support manufacturing performance, improve process capability, and contribute to projects that have meaningful operational impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support manufacturing and process engineering initiatives focused on improving yield, quality, throughput, cost, and overall process performance.

  • Analyze process data to identify trends, investigate variability, and support data-driven decision-making.

  • Assist in identifying process and equipment constraints and developing practical improvement recommendations.

  • Participate in root cause analysis and structured problem-solving efforts to address manufacturing challenges.

  • Collaborate with production, maintenance, and engineering teams to support daily operations and plant priorities.

  • Assist with process trials, raw material evaluations, equipment modifications, and implementation of process changes.

  • Prepare technical documentation and communicate project updates, results, and recommendations to stakeholders.

  • Contribute to special projects aligned with site and business objectives.

Experiences/Education - Required

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Ceramic Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

  • Expected graduation date of December 2027 or later.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented manufacturing environment.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.

Experiences/Education - Desired

  • Prior internship, co-op, laboratory, research, or project experience in an engineering or manufacturing environment.

  • Familiarity with manufacturing data analysis and technical problem-solving.

  • Exposure to structured problem-solving methodologies such as Six Sigma or the scientific method.

  • Demonstrated interest in manufacturing, materials processing, process engineering, or continuous improvement.

  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams in a production setting.

The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
