FUL - Park Ranger (Preventative Search and Rescue)

Summary You will serve as a FUL - Park Ranger (Preventative Search and Rescue) . This position applies thorough knowledge of preventative search and rescue concepts, principles, and practices to analyze, evaluate, and coordinate matters involving preventative search and rescue. Responsibilities Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Coordinates the day-to-day operations of a preventative search and rescue operations (e.g., patrols, education, technical search and rescue, etc.). Compiles and analyzes data on PSAR program operations. Serves as a team member on large and/or highly complex search and rescue incidents. Coordinates the design, preparation, and distribution of printed and/or electronic PSAR materials and/or signs. Develops and delivers search and rescue, emergency medical services, and/or PSAR-related trainings and lectures. Develops and delivers PSAR outreach presentations and talks. Provides emergency medical services (EMS), under medical oversight. Distributes maps, brochures, and other printed material, inform visitors of potential safety hazards. Performs traffic/crowd control at park entrance stations, parking lots, and/or related locations. Requirements Conditions of Employment Must be a U.S. Citizen or National. All candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements. You will need to upload documentation in the application package to confirm you meet the selective factor. - AND - In addition to the selective factor listed above; to qualify for this position at the GS-9 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include but are not limited to Park guide or tour leader, Law enforcement or investigative work, Archeological or historical preservation research work, Forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area, Management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 2 full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree in a major study such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. You must include transcripts. -OR- COMBINATION of EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To compute this percentage, first divide the total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide the number of completed higher-level graduate education semester hours of education (that are in excess of 18 semester hours) by 36. Add the two percentages together; the total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. NOTE: Only higher-level graduate education in excess of more than one-year may be used to qualify for this position and must be in a major such as those listed above. Physical Demands: The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as climbing, hiking, and lifting heavy objects. Work may be performed on uneven, steep, rough, slippery, and/or rugged terrain. EMS and search and rescue involve walking long distances over rough terrain, carrying heavy loads, and using technical rescue equipment. Going without sleep for long periods of time is a common occurrence. Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office setting, classroom, in the field, on trails, and in remote backcountry or wilderness settings. Search and Rescue and EMS work involves frequent exposure to potentially dangerous situations and/or hazardous environments to include hazardous flight landings and takeoffs, extreme outdoor weather conditions, and/or exposure to communicable diseases. Various levels of personal protective clothing are required to perform functions safely.
