Job Title: Electrical Designer

Job Description

The Electrical Designer provides hands-on technical engineering and design support for industrial projects, focusing on automated control systems and related electrical infrastructure. This role leads the design and programming of PLC, HMI, VFD, and motion control systems from initial hardware design and software integration through construction start-up, while coordinating multidisciplinary resources and ensuring high-quality deliverables for bid and construction.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on technical engineering and electrical design support for industrial projects, ensuring robust, reliable, and maintainable solutions.

  • Develop the scope of project work and prepare detailed estimates of engineering and design hours required to complete assigned tasks and project phases.

  • Issue, review, and conduct QA/QC of electrical and controls design packages for bid and construction, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards.

  • Coordinate and execute the design and programming of PLC, HMI, VFD, and servo motion control projects from hardware design and software integration through construction start-up.

  • Design and lay out electrical panels, incorporating appropriate sensing technologies, network communications, and automation components.

  • Coordinate and lead engineering, design, and CAD resources to deliver integrated project solutions on schedule.

  • Serve as the lead controls engineer for construction activities, providing technical guidance and supporting field implementation.

  • Provide start-up support for automated control systems, troubleshooting issues and optimizing system performance.

  • Travel as required, domestically and internationally, to perform field work and support project and business objectives.

  • Work collaboratively and build effective relationships with colleagues, stakeholders, and project team members.

  • Communicate effectively across all levels within the organization, providing clear technical information and project updates.

  • Maintain a positive, solutions-oriented attitude while managing multiple priorities and project demands.

  • Interact with clients on a regular basis to understand requirements, present design solutions, and support project execution.

Essential Skills

  • At least 8 years of electrical design engineering experience in industrial or similar environments.

  • Strong experience with automated control systems and motion control programming using Rockwell Automation products.

  • Proficiency with HMI systems, AC variable frequency drives (VFDs), and servo motion control applications.

  • Hands-on experience with industrial network communications, including Ethernet, ControlNet and/or Profibus.

  • Experience with sensing technologies and electrical panel design and layout.

  • Ability to develop project scopes and accurately estimate engineering and design hours.

  • Demonstrated capability to coordinate and execute PLC, HMI, VFD, and servo motion projects from hardware design through construction start-up.

  • Experience leading engineering, design, and CAD resources in a project environment.

  • Strong QA/QC skills for reviewing and validating design packages for bid and construction.

  • Effective communication skills across all organizational levels and with clients.

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and build strong working relationships.

  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally for field work and project needs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) is a plus.

  • Experience coordinating construction activities as a lead controls engineer.

  • Experience in industrial project environments, including start-up and commissioning support.

  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude in a fast-paced, project-driven setting.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation and design deliverables.

Work Environment

The role is based in an industrial project environment where you provide hands-on technical engineering and design support throughout the project lifecycle. Work involves office-based design and programming activities as well as time at client sites for field work, construction coordination, and system start-up. Travel may be required, both domestically and internationally, to support project and business objectives. You work closely with engineering, design, and CAD teams, using modern automation technologies such as Rockwell Automation PLCs, HMIs, AC VFDs, servo motion systems, and industrial communication networks including Ethernet, ControlNet, and Profibus. The environment emphasizes collaboration, effective communication, and a positive, professional attitude while delivering high-quality design packages for bid and construction.
