Full job description

Description

Join the Programming Foundations Team within Amazon Builder Experience as a Software Development Engineer. The Language Experience team in Builder Tools is the center of excellence for Amazon's use of programming languages, highly-leveraged shared software, and application build tools.

Our tools are used in all aspects of the business, and their care and evolution are of critical importance to the effectiveness of Amazon. We're looking for a deeply technical leader interested in sustaining and evolving the shared software platform used by nearly every service within the company. Those with experience evolving broadly distributed and highly complex software libraries, such as large open source projects and mission critical foundational software stacks will be given an opportunity to have company wide impact.

Key job responsibilities

You will design and build developer tools that Amazon engineers use every day. You will work with the languages and libraries that power Amazon's services, making them easier to use and more reliable. You will help maintain our build tools, compilers, libraries and frameworks. You will shape how OSS upstream projects are developing, including contributing to them directly yourself. You will collaborate with engineers across Amazon to understand their pain points and build tools, libraries and frameworks that address them. You will mentor the engineers you work closely with and help bar raise the builder experience from the language perspective. You will write code, review code from teammates, and help others debug issues with our tools.

A day in the life

Your work will directly affect how builders at Amazon do their jobs. We are a language expertise team at the heart of being able to compile and shift software. This is practical work that requires understanding what builders actually need and building tools that solve their problems without getting in the way.

About the team

The Programming Foundations Team is part of Amazon Builder Experience. We work on the basic tools and infrastructure that builders use to write software. Our team includes engineers who care about developer experience and want to make building software at Amazon easier. We do not own customer-facing products directly, but our work affects every team that builds software at Amazon. We focus on doing useful work rather than flashy projects. If you like building tools that help other engineers and want to work on problems that span the whole company, this team might be a good fit.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience

  • 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
