Full job description

  • Under general supervision from the chief horticulturist, plan, monitor, and supervise a horticulture program for inmates at your assigned location and other sites (if applicable).
  • Perform duties relating to the function of horticulture/grounds maintenance activities working with inmates to support a horticulture/grounds maintenance program and other horticulture special projects as assigned.
  • Provide supervision and instruction to inmate participants/assigned staff for the care of complex grounds concerning landscape installation, maintenance, vegetable gardening and seasonal color.
  • Maintain equipment.
  • Responsible for inventory of chemicals, accountable for tools/equipment.
  • Responsible for the security of the work area.
  • Establish and maintain a greenhouse.
  • Assist with special event support.
  • Must obtain SC Applicator's Pesticide License within first year of employment.

Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and custodial, groundskeeping or maintenance experience directly related to the area of employment.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A high school diploma and custodial, groundskeeping or maintenance experience directly related to the area of employment

OR

  • A horticulture degree focusing on the science and art of growing and managing plants.

  • Must possess or obtain a SC Applicator's Pesticide License within first year of employment.
