Under general direction, the Health Information Management Technician supports the integrity of the electronic health record by preparing, imaging, indexing, and validating medical documentation in accordance with HIM standards. The role performs qualitative and quantitative reviews as required to ensure records are complete and accurate, assists coding operations by obtaining needed information and monitoring work queues, and processes release-of-information requests in compliance with privacy regulations. The technician proactively communicates and collaborates with clinical, coding, and documentation stakeholders to resolve issues affecting timeliness, quality, compliance, reimbursement, and service delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for reviewing content, completion, timeliness and accuracy of medical record documentation to ensure the quality of document.

  • Perform quantitative chart analysis on patient records, as defined by department management to ensure that the documentation meets the requirements per State, Federal, DNV, The Joint Commission, and Medical Staff rules and regulations as assigned

  • Assign record deficiencies for provider completion. Provides ongoing communication to appropriate personnel for education to the provider on the documentation completion process.

  • Collaborate with other HIM functional areas to investigate and resolve issues related to chart deficiencies.

  • Responsible for routing scanned reports for documentation corrections.

  • Maintains quality and productivity expectations

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience:

  • One year of experience with an electronic health record or hospital/medical setting. Previous medical clerical/office experience or formal training in the Health Information Technology field.

License(s)/Certification(s):

  • Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons required .

  • Prefer RHIT or RHIA
