Full job description

Reporting to the Director of Alumni Relations, the Associate Director helps build strong, lifelong relationships between Susquehanna University and its students and alumni. This role focuses on creating programs and experiences that connect current students and recent graduates to the broader alumni community — especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. The Associate Director designs and manages meaningful events, communications, and volunteer opportunities that strengthen alumni engagement, promote pride in the university, and build inclusive networks of support. The Associate Director of Alumni Relations is part of the Advancement Division team. This position is defined as an exempt position under FLSA regulations.

  • Student & Young Alumni Engagement: Develop programs that connect students and young alumni to the university, promote SU traditions, and foster a sense of belonging and community.
  • Career Connections: Create opportunities for student-alumni interaction through networking events, mentorship programs, career panels, and admissions support.
  • Affinity-Based Outreach: Support identity-based programs and affinity groups that aim to increase engagement across diverse alumni populations. Identify, recruit, and collaborate with alumni volunteers who represent a wide range of backgrounds.
  • Volunteer Support: Help alumni become more involved with Susquehanna through mentoring, admissions, and regional or identity-based programming. Manage and support volunteers to deepen engagement.
  • Event Planning & Collaboration: Plan, promote, and staff events on and off campus, often in partnership with the Career Development Center and other offices. Key events include Break Through, Gates-Mueller Women’s Leadership Symposium, alumni-student networking activities and more.
  • Communications: Work with Communications and University Relations to strengthen outreach to students and young alumni, highlight alumni success stories, and enhance the visibility of engagement efforts.
  • Data & Impact: Track engagement metrics and adjust programming at the direction of the Director of Alumni Engagement to improve outcomes and support long-term connection with the university.
  • Support Advancement Goals: Assist with fundraising and collaborate with gift officers to support philanthropic engagement.
  • Student Supervision: Hire, train, and mentor a student worker who will assist with alumni programming and engagement efforts.

Education A bachelor’s degree is required.

Experience Minimum of three years’ experience in alumni relations, advancement, student activities, sales, marketing, public relations, or a related field required.

  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to interact with a range of constituents, colleagues and personalities.
  • Creativity is required to produce effective programming for a variety of audiences.
  • Strong social and motivational skills.
  • Willingness to travel and to work unusual hours is essential.
  • Events management and organization skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, along with the capacity to prioritize.
  • Customer service orientation.

Additional Requirements This position requires a valid driver’s license, and the ability to drive and qualify under the university’s insurance carrier when driving a university and/or leased vehicle. Occasional evening and weekend work, regional travel, and events.

Physical DemandPosition requires the ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time. Position requires the ability to move about the campus. Position requires the ability to talk and to hear instruction. Position requires occasional manual dexterity and the ability to use fingers, hands, and arms to feel, handle, and reach. Position requires occasional stooping, crouching and bending. Position requires the ability to occasionally lift up to 10 pounds. Working conditions are indoor.
