VDC (BIM) Specialist - Piping & Fabrication

Location: 100% Remote

We're seeking a VDC/BIM Specialist with a strong passion for piping, fabrication, and building models that actually get built in the field. This is an opportunity to join a team that values practical construction knowledge, coordination expertise, and a fabrication-first mindset. The ideal candidate understands the journey from model to shop floor to installation and enjoys solving real-world constructability challenges.

This role is focused on developing detailed LOD 400 fabrication models for mechanical and piping systems, coordinating with other trades, and producing high-quality fabrication and installation deliverables. The work supports commercial and industrial projects where accuracy, coordination, and constructability are critical.

What You'll Do

• Develop and maintain detailed LOD 400 mechanical and piping models.

• Create fabrication deliverables including shop drawings, spool drawings, hanger drawings, and sleeve layouts.

• Perform clash detection and trade coordination using Navisworks and related tools.

• Work closely with fabrication teams and field personnel to ensure models are accurate and buildable.

• Participate in coordination meetings with project stakeholders and trade partners.

• Support and mentor junior detailing or VDC team members.

• Assist in resolving constructability issues and generating RFIs when required.

What We're Looking For

• Experience detailing mechanical, piping, or plumbing systems in a fabrication environment.

• Strong proficiency with Autodesk Fabrication CADmep.

• Working knowledge of Revit, AutoCAD, and Navisworks.

• History with a mechanical contractor, piping contractor, fabrication shop, or self-perform construction organization.

• Understanding of spools, hangers, sleeves, cut lists, field installation practices, and coordination workflows.

• Experience coordinating against other trade models and driving clash resolution.

• Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment while collaborating effectively with project teams.

Ideal Progression

We're especially interested in professionals who have grown up in the piping and mechanical trades. Candidates who started in the field as pipefitters, installers, foremen, or fabrication personnel and transitioned into detailing, BIM, or VDC tend to excel in this environment. A practical understanding of how systems are fabricated and installed is just as valuable as software proficiency.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Apex, NC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $70.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
