Assistant Controller — Construction / Oil & Gas Abilene, TX | 4-Year Project | $110K–$120K + $175/day per diem + $1,200/month car allowance Schedule: M–F, some Saturdays Relocation: Not offered (per diem provided) | Full benefits, PTO, 401k, paid holidays
About the Role Our client is seeking an Assistant Controller to support project-level cost controls on a major 4-year construction project in Abilene, TX. Reporting to the Senior Controller, you'll help maintain accurate, reliable cost data that drives project decision-making in a fast-paced construction and oil/gas environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain project budgets, cost breakdown structures, and cost coding
- Track commitments, actual costs, forecasts, and budget performance
- Compare budgeted vs. actual costs and flag discrepancies
- Prepare weekly/monthly cost reports and dashboards
- Track change orders, scope changes, and maintain audit trails
- Review invoices, commitments, and subcontractor/supplier documentation
- Coordinate with PMs, Accounting, Estimating, Procurement, and field teams
- Maintain data accuracy in Procore and internal reporting systems
- Support the Senior Controller with audits and financial reviews
- Comfortable using Claude/AI tools for reporting and efficiency
Software Procore, Excel, project cost tracking/reporting systems, AI tools (Claude)
What They are Looking For
- Experience: 2–5 years of project accounting or cost accounting
- Education: Bachelor's preferred not required; accounting, finance, construction management, or business background relevant
- Skills: Excel (important), Procore (strongly preferred), ERP/project accounting systems a plus; cost tracking, budgeting support, commitments/actuals, cost coding, reporting, change documentation, invoice review, analytical problem-solving, and AI-driven efficiency
