The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) provides leadership, resources, support, and guidance to approximately 200,000 school district staff serving approximately 1.5 million students in public and non-public schools and 39,000 students in special education transition services. In addition, MDE provides administrative support and supervision for the Michigan School for the Deaf and the Library of Michigan. MDE is responsible for state education leadership in a local control state and works to implement state and federal education laws, disburse state and federal resources, license educators, develop state summative assessments and accountability systems, create state academic standards, and coordinate school health and nutrition programs. In addition, in developing and promoting the state’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, MDE works with partner education entities and stakeholders to improve public education for children across the state. MDE’s role in the improvement of public education extends to providing information and feedback to public policy-makers, convening educators on public policy issues, recommending draft language on legislation, and developing guidance to districts on statutory changes adopted at the state and federal levels. The Office of Nutrition Services is the state administering agency for federal food programs such as National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, Child and Adult Care Food Program, Summer Food Service Program, including Rural Non-congregate, Summer EBT, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, Farm to Program, and commodity programs such as USDA Foods for Schools, The Emergency Food Assistance Program, and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program. Each program has required applications, monitoring and reporting, as well as training/technical assistance and outreach or program development requirements. This position provides a coordinated approach to the mission of improving health and nutrition outcomes for Michigan’s children, using key partnerships and other office leaders for the successful implementation of nutrition programs. The Child Nutrition Program Consultant position performs a range of professional school district consultant assignments specific to Child Nutrition Program integrity, New Program/Director training, and training evaluation. The employee has the responsibility to consult, advise, train, and provide customer service to school boards, school administrators, all food service personnel, and interest groups concerning the administration and operation of the Child Nutrition Programs. The position assists with outreach, program training, technical assistance, training evaluation, and monitoring.

Job Specification

Possession of a master's degree in education or a field related to education program administration (non-academic). School District Consultant 11 No specific type or amount is required.

School District Consultant 12 One year of post-master's, professional experience in school program management in a consultative capacity or administrative experience in school program management equivalent to a School District Consultant 11.

School District Consultant P13 Two years of post-master’s, professional experience in school program management in a consultative capacity or administrative experience in school program management, including one year equivalent to a School District Consultant 12.

School District Consultant 12 - 14 Possession of a doctorate degree in education or a field related to education program administration (non-academic) may be substituted for one year of the experience requirement. Some positions may require a current or past possession of a Michigan's teacher's certificate or one comparable to the one issued in Michigan.
