JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Psychiatric)- Inpatient Hospital Coverage

Department: Medical Management

Reports To: Medical Director

Position Summary

Under supervision of the Executive Director, the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and medication management services to patients in an inpatient hospital setting.

This position is exclusively hospital-based and is responsible for delivering care within assigned inpatient facilities. This role does not include services within Astra Behavioral Health outpatient clinic locations.

Qualifications

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a specialty in psychiatric/mental health nursing

National Certification by the ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

Possession of an unencumbered license as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practitioner in the state of Kentucky

Current DEA registration and ability to prescribe controlled substances

Inpatient psychiatric experience preferred

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  1. Performs psychiatric evaluations and diagnoses of adult and adolescent patients in an inpatient hospital setting with acute and/or chronic psychiatric disorders.

  2. Utilizes knowledge of psychiatric disorders, psychopharmacology, crisis stabilization, and treatment modalities to develop and implement individualized treatment plans.

  3. Prescribes and manages psychotropic medications in accordance with established medical protocols and regulatory requirements.

  4. Conducts daily patient rounds and ongoing psychiatric assessments to monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans as needed.

  5. Orders laboratory work and other diagnostic testing as indicated for evaluation and ongoing treatment.

  6. Collaborates with psychiatrists, nursing staff, therapists, social workers, and other members of the interdisciplinary treatment team to coordinate patient care.

  7. Participates in treatment team meetings, case consultations, and discharge planning to ensure continuity of care.

  8. Provides crisis intervention and management of patients experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms or behavioral disturbances.

  9. Communicates effectively with patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and discharge recommendations.

  10. Ensures timely, accurate, and complete documentation in accordance with hospital policies, Astra Behavioral Health standards, and regulatory requirements.

  11. Coordinates with outpatient providers and community resources to facilitate appropriate discharge planning and follow-up care.

  12. Participates in hospital and Astra Behavioral Health quality improvement initiatives and program development as needed.

  13. Maintains compliance with all applicable federal, state, and accrediting body regulations (e.g., HIPAA, CARF, CMS, and hospital policies).

  14. Performs other duties as assigned.
