Highway Maintenance Worker

Job Duties

The Highway Maintenance Worker performs a wide range of skilled maintenance, repair, and operational tasks to support McLeod County Public Works and ensure safe, functional roads, parks, and facilities for residents and visitors. Responsibilities include conducting daily equipment inspections, documenting project time and materials, operating light, heavy, and specialized equipment, and performing snow and ice control to county standards. The role also involves performing routine equipment maintenance and repairs, completing highway maintenance tasks on various road surfaces, conducting right‑of‑way inspections, and setting up compliant work zone traffic control. In addition, the position supports parks and fairgrounds by maintaining facilities in clean and safe condition, performing grounds upkeep, and assisting with event setups. Workers may assist other Public Works divisions as needed and are expected to uphold safety standards, use proper tools and equipment, follow departmental procedures, and respond to emergencies or after‑hours calls when required.

Minimum Education Required

The minimum education required for the Highway Maintenance Worker position is a high school diploma or equivalent. Applicants should also have two years of prior responsible work experience related to maintenance, construction, equipment operation, or similar duties, or possess an equivalent combination of education and experience that adequately prepares them for the essential functions of the job.

Minimum Experience Required

Candidates must have at least two years of relevant experience demonstrating skill in operating equipment, performing maintenance tasks, and working safely in outdoor or physically demanding environments. Experience related to road maintenance, snow and ice control, facility repair, parks and grounds upkeep, or construction work is highly beneficial. Additional preference is given to individuals with experience in county or state snow and ice operations, motor grader use, general highway maintenance, or park and recreation maintenance. A CDL LICENSE IS REQUIRED.
