Position and Salary The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Paralegal 2 Supervisor in the Criminal Justice Division. This position is located in Seattle, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).

Paralegal 2 Salary Range (Range 55): $62,880 - $84,528/annually. The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The following stipends may apply based on position requirements:

  • Paralegal 2s assigned to work within King County receive Group C Assignment Pay in addition to their base pay. The Group C pay percentage received at this classification is a limited premium and applies at the Paralegal 2 classification.• King County Paralegal 2s – 5% Group C Assignment Pay

  • Incumbents assigned to our Seattle office location receive an additional 5% King County Location Pay stipend.

About the Criminal Justice Division The mission of the Criminal Justice Division (CRJ) is to work with and support its partners in the criminal justice community to protect Washington citizens and state agencies from criminal activity and fraud. CRJ is comprised of five units: the Major Economic Crimes Unit (MECU), the Criminal Litigation Unit (CLU), the Sexually Violent Predator Unit (SVP), the Signature Projects Unit (SPU) and the Washington State Patrol/Criminal Justice Training Commission Unit (WSP/CJTC). While tasked with distinct responsibilities, these units draw on each other’s expertise and collaborate to combat criminal activity, return stolen funds to state agencies, and create safe communities. The MECU and CLU investigate and prosecute criminal cases when requested by the Governor or any of the 39 county prosecuting attorneys, including multi-jurisdictional crimes, violent crimes, financial crimes, and crimes involving specialized expertise such complex fraud, criminal conspiracies, corporate corruption, public corruption, organized retail crime and schemes that target state agencies. The SVP Unit identifies Washington’s most prolific and dangerous sexually violent predators and works to civilly commit those who continue to pose a serious risk to re-offend. The SP Unit has three subunits: HITS, SAIST, and the Missing & Murdered Indigenous People Cold Case Unit. The HITS Unit assists law enforcement by providing investigative expertise and maintaining a statewide database to analyze data regarding crimes and perpetrators and identify and apprehend serial offenders. The Sexual Assault Investigations Support Team (SAIST) implements measures to ensure that lawfully-owed DNA is collected and tested so that cold cases, including serial offenders, can be brought to justice. The Missing and Murdered Indigenous People Cold Case Unit assists federal, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies in investigating unsolved cases involving Indigenous people, who are disproportionately subjected to violent crime. The WSP/CJTC Unit represents and advises the Washington State Patrol and the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. Additionally, the CRJ participates in numerous working groups and task forces, including the Organized Retail Theft Task Force, Missing & Murdered Indigenous Persons Task Force, Seattle University Criminal Justice Advisory Board, Commercial & Sexually Exploited Children Task Force, Sexual Assault Forensic Examinations (SAFE) Advisory Group, Hate Crimes Working Group, Identify Theft Task Force, and the Catalytic Converter Theft Task Force. Duties and Essential Functions of a Supervising Paralegal 2 We seek a Paralegal 2 who will use independent judgment to assist the Assistant Attorneys General at all stages of criminal prosecution from investigation through trial on organized retail crime, financial crime, general prosecution, and sexually violent predator cases. The objective of this position is to serve as a supervising Paralegal 2 for the Criminal Justice Division (CRJ) supervising Paralegal 1s and Legal Office Assistants in a litigation intense environment. This position also supports the mission of the Criminal Justice Division (CRJ) by providing guidance and direction to direct supports. The person selected for this position will:

  • Supervise, train, and coach legal support staff in the performance of all duties
  • Assist in the recruitment process for hiring legal support staff
  • Manages and prepares expert witness agreements, updates the expert witness agreement balance log, and processes expert witness invoices
  • Perform journey-level paralegal work in support of Assistant Attorneys General in litigation of state matters
  • Prepare legal pleadings and correspondence
  • File, draft, and serves legal documents in accordance with municipal, county, state, federal, and appellate court rules
  • Schedule depositions, hearings, and coordinate the setting of trials for attorneys
  • Correspond with court administrators, opposing counsel, and other stakeholders regarding case events and case status
  • Advise attorneys of upcoming deadlines for filing of pleadings, meetings, and hearings
  • Perform legal research and draft memoranda of case law, legal opinions, statutes, and court rules
  • Assist in in-office trial preparation, including processing invoices, drafting pleadings, creating trial and exhibit notebooks, and performing other tasks as needed.
  • Use computer databases to create, maintain, and track case-related matters, calendar critical event deadlines, and create tracking sheets to better organize complex litigation

CRJ prosecutes cases in all 39 Washington counties and travel may be required to assist attorneys at trial. This position regularly performs work within the following court venues: Washington State District, Superior, and Appeals Courts in all counties and Divisions; and Federal Courts, specifically, USDC Western, USDC Eastern, and the 9th Circuit. At times, this position may also perform within other State and Federal venues. *You may have gained applicable paraprofessional experience through previous Paralegal or Legal Assistant work. Examples of paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney:

  • Preparing legal pleadings and legal correspondence
  • Ensuring and verifying timely and proper service of legal documents
  • Calculating, verifying, and calendaring critical events and other dates
  • Managing case documents, files and exhibits
  • Tracking and organizing discovery documents
  • Researching legal issues and verifying legal citations and references for accuracy

Preferred Qualifications The most successful candidates will have litigation experience.
