Job Title: Material Handling Supervisor Job Description

The Material Handling Supervisor oversees the efficient movement, storage, and protection of materials and products throughout our facility. In this role, you will lead a team of material handlers, ensure strict adherence to safety protocols, and optimize warehouse workflows to meet production and shipping deadlines. You will manage scheduling, performance evaluations, and daily task assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the receiving, storage, and distribution of raw materials and finished goods.

  • Ensure all materials are delivered to production lines or shipping docks accurately and on time.

  • Oversee cycle counts and physical inventory audits.

  • Utilize Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) or ERP software to maintain real-time inventory precision.

  • Enforce all OSHA and company safety regulations.

  • Conduct regular safety briefings and equipment inspections (forklifts, pallet jacks, etc.) to maintain a zero-accident environment.

  • Identify bottlenecks in material flow and implement Lean or Six Sigma methodologies to improve efficiency and reduce waste.

  • Ensure all material handling equipment is properly maintained and scheduled for routine service.

  • Work closely with Production, Procurement, and Quality Control departments to resolve discrepancies and ensure seamless operations.

Essential Skills

  • 35 years of experience in warehouse operations, logistics, or material handling.

  • At least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role, managing a team of at least 10 people.

  • Continuous Improvement experience within a manufacturing setting.

  • Proficiency in Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook).

  • Valid forklift operator certification (or the ability to become certified).

  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in Body shop/stamping/subassembly, or manufacturing assembly and machining.

  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles and Constraint management principles.

  • Experience in UAW or Union supervision preferred.

  • Prior experience managing a UAW workforce in a subassembly environment is a bonus.

  • Strong problem-solving and conflict management skills.

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

  • Ability to work any shift as well as rotating shifts and weekends.

Work Environment

The facility operates with approximately 2,400 total employees, with roughly 2,150 being UAW hourly workers. The materials department consists of 200 union workers who support the rest of the plant. The operation runs on three shifts around the clock, and flexibility to work any shift is required. Expect to work 6-7 days a week, with overtime and weekend shifts often necessary. Supervisors should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to their shift.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $26.26 - $37.94/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
