Full job description

Job Description

This Process Engineer supports paint shop operations with a primary focus on automation, robotics, equipment reliability, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement. The role is highly visible and fast-paced, requiring an engineer who can quickly adapt to changing priorities while maintaining production uptime and paint quality standards.

The engineer will spend approximately:

  • 90% on the production floor

  • 10% in the office

Floor responsibilities include:

  • 40% troubleshooting

  • 40% operational support

  • 20% paperwork, process control plans, and strategic planning.

Technical Environment:

Inside Process Responsibilities

Supports highly automated paint lines:

  • Approximately 3 automated paint lines

  • Supports roughly 30 robots

  • Maintains line uptime and equipment functionality

  • Works directly with automation systems

  • Troubleshoots robots while equipment remains operational when possible

  • Makes process adjustments to maintain production flow

Key Systems

  • Robotics

  • Automated paint equipment

  • Controls and automation systems

  • Process monitoring tools

Outside Process Responsibilities

Supports approximately 20 paint bays and surrounding systems:

  • Paint mix systems

  • Pumps

  • Piping

  • Valves

  • Industrial automation equipment

  • Process support involving basic chemistry concepts

  • Significant amount of walking and floor presence

Day in the Life

Typical Start of Shift

  • Arrive 15-30 minutes early

  • Review emails and production updates

  • Meet with counterpart engineer

  • Attend 6:00 AM cross-shift meeting

  • Immediately assess production status

Daily Responsibilities

  • Verify all areas are running properly

  • Address manpower and operational concerns

  • Support maintenance and operations teams

  • Troubleshoot line-down situations

  • Restore equipment to production quickly

  • Analyze paint defects and quality concerns

  • Observe process performance and identify root causes

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives

  • Maintain process control plans
