Responsibilities You will be responsible for servicing, inspecting, maintaining, and repairing a variety of heavy mobile equipment. You will be responsible for repairing/overhauling at least one type of major system, i.e., diesel, multi-fuel, and gasoline engines, automatic/non-automatic transmissions, multi-gear assemblies, and a variety of positioning systems. You will be responsible for troubleshooting, tracing, and locating defects and causes of mechanical problems to determine type and extent of necessary repairs. You will be responsible for complying with appropriate repair specifications and procedures. You will be responsible for independently performing preventive maintenance and services on various complex electrical devices, equipment, and components. You will be responsible for guiding and training lower graded employees. You will be responsible for sketching, removing, identifying, manufacturing, installing, and repairing sheet metal components of motor transport equipment and a variety of heavy mobile equipment vehicles. You will performs refrigeration mechanics; installs, operates, and repairs refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and systems. You will prototype and review new overhaul and test procedures on items being introduced into the workload. Education Additional Information The purpose of this position is to maintain, repair, and modify a variety of heavy-duty vehicles and mobile equipment which have utility systems or special hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, or electronic systems, features, or controls designed for construction, combat, earth moving, ship loading, firefighting, and comparable industrial or special applications. Physical work is strenuous. May require uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Works on top of, under, and in tight compartments, performing strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items unassisted weighing up to 40 pounds and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment Frequently lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. May work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights. Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside. When inside, is frequently exposed to draft changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outside, may work in bad weather; in sand, mud, or snow; and in very hot, wet, or icy areas. In both inside and outside, workers are exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, cold, heat and fumes. They are also subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls. This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
