The Machine Learning Department (MLD) at Carnegie Mellon University is a leading hub for research and education in artificial intelligence and machine learning. It focuses on developing innovative algorithms and models to address complex problems in diverse fields such as robotics, healthcare, and finance. The department offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs, fostering a collaborative environment that bridges theoretical research and practical applications. Faculty and students frequently collaborate with industry and other academic disciplines to push the boundaries of what is possible with machine learning.

The Delphi Group within MLD is seeking a Data Engineer to join the team! The ideal candidate would have experience with recent versions of Apache Airflow, but we are open to other candidates with strong programming and interpersonal skills who are interested in moving more deeply into the data engineering space. We’re looking for someone who will be a team player who is able to work with people from diverse backgrounds, with different levels of statistical, epidemiological, and software development experience, to produce an innovative product as a member of a team of academics, statistical developers and data engineers.

Core Responsibilities

  • Writing documentation, technical papers, progress reports and participating in meetings/committees.

  • Contributor in developing and documenting research findings and collaborator in writing scientific papers

  • Acts as team leader, providing project management direction

  • Lead research efforts within main goals of project and help coordinate interactions with other team members and universities.

  • Propose and lead independent research goals within scope of projects.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

  • 5-8 years of relevant work experience required.

  • Experience in agile software development, SQL, data visualization, web development, and statistics/data analytics highly desired.

  • A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
