Job Description
Seeking a Senior Robotics Controls Engineer to develop the core autonomy systems powering the next generation of autonomous mining vehicles. You will design, deploy, and improve the control algorithms that enable 200+ ton haul trucks to safely navigate complex off-road environments.
This is a highly impactful role focused on real-world autonomy, not research prototypes. You'll work across localization, state estimation, vehicle controls, system identification, and autonomous vehicle behavior, taking solutions from concept through deployment in operating mine sites.
As an early member of a rapidly growing robotics organization, you'll have significant ownership over technical decisions, architecture, and the future direction of our autonomy stack.
- Design, develop, and deploy production-grade controls algorithms for autonomous mining vehicles
- Own critical autonomy capabilities including:
- State Estimation
- Localization
- Longitudinal Control
- Lateral Control
- Path Following
- Vehicle Navigation
- Develop optimization-based controllers such as Model Predictive Control (MPC)
- Build and maintain state estimation pipelines utilizing GPS/RTK, IMU, and vehicle telemetry
- Perform system identification to model and improve vehicle behavior
- Analyze vehicle performance using logs, simulation, and real-world field testing
- Debug autonomy and control issues on deployed vehicles and identify root causes
- Collaborate closely with Planning, Perception, Hardware, and Systems Engineering teams
- Participate in field deployments and validation activities at customer mine sites
- Drive control architecture improvements for future autonomous vehicle platforms including haul trucks, loaders, excavators, and other heavy equipment
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership across controls development
- Technical environment:
- Languages: Python (primary), C++ (optimization-critical paths)
- Libraries: NumPy, SciPy
- Hardware: NVIDIA Jetson, GPS/RTK, IMUs, CAN interfaces
- Testing: Field testing on haul trucks, log replay, simulation
- Schedule note: Some travel (up to 15%) and schedule flexibility may be required during deployments
Skills and Requirements
- BS, MS, or PhD in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
- 5+ years of professional robotics, autonomy, or controls engineering experience
- Strong proficiency in both Python, NumPY/SciPY and C+• Experience developing and deploying controls algorithms on real-world robotic or autonomous systems
- Strong understanding of:
- Vehicle Dynamics
- Kinematics
- State Estimation
- Localization
- Control Theory
- Experience with:
- Kalman Filters (EKF/UKF)
- System Identification
- Signal Processing
- Sensor Fusion
- Experience debugging production autonomy systems using logs and telemetry
- Demonstrated ownership of projects from design through deployment
- Autonomous Vehicle (AV) experience
- Off-road autonomy experience
- Mining, construction, agriculture, defense, or heavy equipment robotics experience
- Experience with:
- Model Predictive Control (MPC)
- Optimization-based control systems
- Stanley Controller
- Pure Pursuit
- Motion control systems
- Experience integrating GPS/RTK and IMU sensors
- Knowledge of CAN Bus and vehicle interface protocols
- ROS or equivalent robotics middleware experience
- Experience supporting deployed robotic systems in the field
- Background working in highly cross-functional, fast-paced startup environments
