Full job description

The Department of Mathematics (https://www.math.upenn.edu/) at the University of Pennsylvania (https://www.upenn.edu/) invites applications for one tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Algebra or Analysis. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Mathematics and conducting research in their field.

We are a collaborative and interactive department. We pursue original investigations in Differential Geometry, Partial Differential Equations, Functional Analysis, Mathematical Physics, Algebraic Topology, Algebraic Geometry and Algebraic Number Theory, Combinatorics and Algorithms, Category Theory, Logic and its applications to Computer Science, and several other areas of current mathematical development. The Mathematics Department is housed within the School of Arts & Sciences (https://www.sas.upenn.edu/) , which is comprised of the College of Arts and Sciences (https://www.college.upenn.edu/) , the Graduate Division (https://www.sas.upenn.edu/graduate/) , and the College of Liberal and Professional Studies (https://www.lps.upenn.edu/) . Interdisciplinary research and collaboration are supported by the breadth and depth of academic pursuits at Penn (https://www.hr.upenn.edu/PennHR/careers-at-penn/penn) as well as the proximity of resources on our contiguous green urban campus (https://facilities.upenn.edu/services/landscape) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We promote and encourage curiosity, intellectual engagement, and discovery among all our students and faculty. University, School, and departmental resources that support our efforts include but are not limited to: the Offices of the Vice Provost for Faculty (https://faculty.upenn.edu/) and Vice Provost for Research (https://research.upenn.edu/) , PennGlobal (https://global.upenn.edu/) , Wellness at Penn (https://wellness.upenn.edu/) , the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning (https://cetli.upenn.edu/) and Innovation , the Penn Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (https://curf.upenn.edu/) , and Penn Human Resources (https://www.hr.upenn.edu/) .

The department offers an undergraduate major that provides students an understanding of the modern discipline of mathematics. More generally, we teach hundreds of undergraduate students and sixty grad students each year. Our graduate students often go on to become postdocs and faculty in academic institutions, and to work as applied research mathematicians for government agencies, as industry scientists working in data analysis, and as researchers in biotech companies. Our department also participates in cross-disciplinary efforts, many faculty interacting with adjacent undergraduate programs such as computer science, physics, systems and mechanical engineering, and operations research and statistics in the business school.

  • Strong research potential

  • Capacity for teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and mentoring and supporting a diverse student body

  • The ability to direct graduate/undergraduate research

  • Candidates are required to have a PhD and expected to have some postdoctoral experience by July 1, 2027, which is the starting date for this appointment.

  • The successful candidate will be expected to

o attract external funding

  • Please provide the following application materials to URL:

o CV

o Cover letter

o Personal statement(s):
