Job Description

Insight Global is seeking a Distribution Engineer II to support a large electric utility client in the Chicago area. This individual will join a growing utility engineering team focused on overhead and underground electric distribution design projects. The role offers the opportunity to work on everything from routine pole replacement projects to major storm hardening, circuit rebuild, and infrastructure modernization initiatives. This is a hybrid position based in downtown Chicago (near Greektown) with approximately 20% field work and 80% engineering design work. The ideal candidate will have prior utility distribution experience and be able to contribute with minimal oversight.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities Support electric distribution projects ranging from simple pole replacement programs to complex system rebuild and storm hardening initiatives Perform field visits to collect measurements, photographs, and existing infrastructure information Support staking activities, site evaluations, and construction coordination efforts Design overhead and underground electric distribution systems Develop engineering and construction packages, including drawings, one-line diagrams, and bills of material Utilize utility-specific software platforms such as Smallworld GIS, MicroStation, and Asset Suite 8 Perform engineering calculations and support conductor selection, routing, system improvements, and reliability projects Design solutions for: Pole replacements Pole reframing projects Reconductoring initiatives Circuit rebuilds Circuit reroutes Storm hardening programs Coordinate with utility stakeholders, field crews, project managers, and engineering teams Support projects throughout design, permitting, construction, and closeout phases Ensure designs comply with utility standards, safety requirements, and regulatory guidelines Work Environment Hybrid schedule: Monday & Friday: Remote Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: Onsite in Chicago Approximately 20% field work and 80% office/design work Occasional local travel to project sites throughout ComEd service territory Mileage reimbursement available when personal vehicle use is required

Skills and Requirements

Must Have Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related Engineering discipline 3-5+ years of electric utility distribution engineering or distribution design experience Experience supporting overhead (OH) and underground (UG) electric distribution projects Experience conducting field visits, collecting measurements, performing site assessments, and supporting construction activities Experience developing distribution construction packages, engineering drawings, bills of material, and permitting documentation Understanding of utility engineering standards, construction practices, and design methodologies Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously Strong communication skills and ability to work directly with utility clients, field personnel, designers, and engineers Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite Highly Preferred Previous ComEd experience Experience supporting Exelon utilities Experience working within utility work management systems Ability to step into projects with minimal training and supervision

Preferred Qualifications Experience with Smallworld GIS Experience with MicroStation Experience with Asset Suite 8 (AS8) Experience with SAP EIT certification or progress toward PE licensure Knowledge of NESC, IEEE, and ASCE standards Experience with AutoCAD Utility consulting or engineering services background Experience supporting investor-owned utilities such as ComEd, Exelon, Ameren, Xcel, Avangrid, PECO, or Delmarva Power Experience with PLS-CADD, SPIDAcalc, O-Calc, PoleForeman, IKE, or similar utility engineering tools
