Criminal Justice Trainer 3 - Corrections Officers Academy

The duty station for this position is in King County, therefore the incumbent will receive 5% premium pay in addition to the salary listed above.

The Opportunity: The Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) is seeking a professionally skilled and engaging Criminal Justice Trainer 3 to join our Basic Training Division in support of Corrections training. This position plays an important role in preparing corrections professionals for public service by delivering high-quality training that ensures Washington’s criminal justice professionals have the knowledge and skills to safely protect the communities they serve. As a lead trainer, this position delivers curriculum for the Corrections Officers Academy (COA), Corrections Officers Equivalency Academy (COEA), Juvenile Corrections Officers Academy (JCOA), Juvenile Services Academy (JSA), and the Misdemeanant Probation Counselors Academy (MCPA). Through classroom instruction, practical exercises, and other learning environments, the Criminal Justice Trainer 3 delivers curriculum to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and professional foundation necessary to succeed in their roles. • Facilitation and delivery of agency approved curriculum including classroom, practical, and mock scenarios.
• Serve as a lead TAC Officer of Corrections Officers Academy (COA), Corrections Officers Equivalency Academy (COEA), Juvenile Corrections Officers Academy (JCOA), and Juvenile Services Academy (JSA), Misdemeanant Probation Counselors Academy (MCPA) which occasionally run concurrently.
• Train and mentor students guided by WSCJTC policy, rules and regulations, and in keeping with agency values.
• Model trustworthy behavior associated with officers who earn the trust of their communities.
• Reinforce and demonstrate ethical and professional behaviors.
• Maintain order within the academy atmosphere, including motivating classes as a group and students individually in accordance with agency policy.
• Support contracted TAC Officers in leading academy classes, and providing direct assistance, guidance, and instruction.
• Communicate with student’s employing agencies regarding performance, attendance, coordination of additional training needs, test failures and remedial training, when directed.
• Maintain student records to accurately reflect time recording, exam scores, attendance records, etc.
• Track and report student injuries using agency reporting processes and records and notification to the Assistant Commander of Corrections & Administration.

Required Qualifications/Experience:

• At least five (5) years of experience in Corrections or Juvenile Detention in an assignment that may require the application of physical force.

-AND-

• At least two (2) years of experience as a trainer of criminal justice personnel (law enforcement, corrections, juvenile corrections) specifically in the areas of de-escalation, communication, criminal law, inmate supervision, and/or control/defensive tactics. Time may run concurrently.

-OR-

• At least seven (7) years of experience in Corrections or Juvenile Detention in an assignment that may require the application of physical force.

-AND-

• At least two (2) years of lead or supervisory experience of criminal justice personnel (law enforcement, corrections, juvenile corrections). Time served as a lead or primary trainer, TAC Officer, or FTO/PTO meet this requirement. Time may run concurrently.
• An understanding of adult teaching and learning methods.
• Ability to report information clearly, completely, and accurately both verbally and in writing.
• No sustained use of force complaints in the past three (3) years.
• Any community complaints in the last three (3) years must be satisfactorily explained.
• Able to model the Guardian Philosophy in class on a daily basis.
• Strong work ethic, self-directed, and able to work in a team-teaching environment.
• Ability to support the agency's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.
• Effective communication skills.
• Problem solving skills, including analysis and strategies.
• Knowledge of the criminal justice system including federal, state, and local criminal justice agencies, laws, ordinances, and regulations.
• Knowledge of cultural diversity/implicit bias.
• The ability to take action to learn and grow.
• The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

• Understanding of and/or experience with WSCJTC protocols and chain of command.

• First level supervisor experience (examples: sergeant, supervisor, manager).

• WSCJTC Instructor Development - 2 (ID2) certification.

• Skills for basic computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.

• Knowledge of training and instruction principles, content, and methodology

• Knowledge of curriculum development.

• Demonstrable experience developing and utilizing resources appropriately.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

• Successfully complete the CJTC 40-hour Instructor Development course.
• Successfully complete the CJTC Pre-Supervisors course.
• Successfully complete the CJTC Use of Force and Control Defensive Tactics course.
• Successfully complete HEROES certified trainer course.
• Attend and/or audit all COA and COEA course instruction modules.
