Job Title: Quality Engineering Technician

Job Description

The Quality Engineering Technician ensures the accuracy and integrity of body welding tooling and sheet metal parts by performing detailed dimensional inspections and data analysis using advanced metrology equipment and 3D comparison software. This role supports sheet metal sub-assembly and body build trials during pre-production events, troubleshoots tooling and fit issues, and provides clear feedback to project leaders to drive continuous improvement in product quality.

Responsibilities

  • Check body welding tooling and part accuracy using Vectorarm, Perceptron, and FARO portable CMM equipment.

  • Gather detailed part information from digital engineering systems, including PolyWorks, Catia, and 3D imaging software.

  • Inspect part quality using hand tools, gauges, and quality checking fixtures to verify conformance to specifications.

  • Support sheet metal sub-assembly and body build trials and activities during pre-production events.

  • Troubleshoot equipment, tooling, parts, and part fitting issues to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.

  • Analyze part and sub-assembly dimensional data and provide clear, concise feedback to project leaders.

  • Use small hand tools to adjust and modify part datums to achieve proper fit and alignment.

  • Create and maintain schedules to ensure inspection, trial, and project activities are completed on time.

  • Collaborate effectively with team members while also working independently when required.

  • Continuously improve skills and stay current with new technologies and methods in quality metrology.

  • Perform medium to heavy physical work as needed to support inspections, trials, and tooling adjustments.

  • Work weekends, holidays, off shifts, and overtime when necessary to support production and project timelines.

Essential Skills

  • 25 years of automotive or aerospace quality metrology experience, specifically in sheet-metal quality assurance.

  • Proficiency in using portable CMM equipment, scanners, and laser trackers such as FARO and Vectorarm.

  • Hands-on experience with 3D comparison software including PolyWorks, Cam2, Scene, and PC-DMIS.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to use small hand tools to adjust and modify part datums.

  • Solid understanding of quality engineering, quality control, and quality assurance principles.

  • Strong computer skills, including MS PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.

  • Ability to create and maintain schedules to manage inspections and project activities.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.

  • Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work as part of daily responsibilities.

  • Flexibility to adjust to changes that may occur on a daily basis in a production and trial environment.

  • Self-starter mindset with strong self-motivation to continuously improve skills and adopt new technologies.

  • Willingness and ability to work weekends, holidays, off shifts, and overtime as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in automotive or aerospace environments focused on sheet-metal quality and body build activities.

  • Experience in metrology and engineering disciplines related to dimensional control and tooling verification.

  • Familiarity with quality checking fixtures and traditional hand measurement tools.

  • Ability to interpret and work with digital engineering data from systems such as Catia and other 3D imaging platforms.

  • Strong communication skills to clearly present findings and feedback to project leaders and cross-functional teams.

  • Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, inspections, and trials in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to travel and support off-site activities when required.

Work Environment

This role operates in a hands-on, production-oriented engineering environment that supports sheet metal sub-assembly and body build trials during pre-production events. The position involves regular use of portable CMM equipment, scanners, laser trackers, quality checking fixtures, and 3D comparison software such as PolyWorks, Cam2, Scene, and PC-DMIS, as well as digital engineering tools like Catia and other 3D imaging systems. The work can include medium to heavy physical activity, frequent interaction on the shop floor, and close collaboration with engineering and production teams. Overtime may be required up to approximately 25%, and travel may also be needed up to about 25% to support trials and project activities at other locations. Schedules can include weekends, holidays, off shifts, and extended hours, with managers offering flexibility to support work/life balance. The environment emphasizes long-term, stable project work, extensive opportunities to learn advanced quality and metrology practices, and strong support for professional growth, including advocacy and coordination through established support programs.
