Scope of Job

The UTRGV SOM is seeking a Board Certified or Board Eligible physician in Radiation Oncology to provide both clinical (non-teaching) and academic radiation services. The successful candidate will serve as Founding Director of Radiation Oncology and Cancer Therapeutics and Cancer Service Line Director for UT Health RGV . The successful candidate will provide leadership across the academic, clinical, research, and strategic dimensions of the growing UTRGV cancer enterprise.

This role will be charged with establishing and leading the UTRGV academic Radiation Oncology program while helping shape the broader development of the UTRGV Cancer Center and providing strategic leadership for cancer services across UT Health RGV . The position will provide an opportunity to build and develop programs, recruit and mentor faculty, establish multidisciplinary clinical and research programs, advance innovative cancer technologies and therapeutics, strengthen the integration of cancer services across UT Health RGV , and develop regional partnerships to advance cancer care throughout South Texas.

Leadership responsibilities will include:

• Establishing and leading the UTRGV academic Radiation Oncology program, including faculty recruitment, clinical quality and safety, education, research, innovation, and long-term programmatic growth.

• Serving as Cancer Service Line Director for UT Health RGV , developing a strategic plan alongside UT Health RGV leadership and providing strategic clinical leadership for the continued development, integration, quality, and growth of cancer services across the health system, while working collaboratively with medical, surgical, radiation, and other oncology leaders.

• Establishing and leading the UTRGV Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program, integrating medical oncology, radiation oncology, breast surgery, imaging, pathology, genetics, survivorship, prevention, and clinical research into a coordinated multidisciplinary program.

• Serving as Co-Director of the UTRGV Cancer Clinical Trials Program, working collaboratively with leadership and other Cancer Center leaders to expand investigator-initiated, cooperative-group, industry-sponsored, and translational cancer trials throughout South Texas.

• Developing a Molecular Imaging, Theranostics, and Radiopharmaceutical Oncology Program, including expansion of diagnostic and therapeutic isotope capabilities and leadership in planning for future radiopharmaceutical production and potential cyclotron development.

• Advancing cancer therapeutics and technology at UTRGV , including innovative radiation techniques, image-guided therapies, precision oncology approaches, theranostics, radiopharmaceutical therapies, and other emerging cancer treatments.

• Recruiting, mentoring, and developing academic cancer specialists and investigators, helping create the faculty and leadership infrastructure necessary for the continued growth and maturation of the UTRGV Cancer Center.

• Developing a Rio Grande Valley Cancer Consortium, bringing together UTRGV and community oncologists, health systems, and cancer programs throughout the region to expand clinical trials, collaborative research, education, advanced therapeutics, and access to high-quality cancer care.

• Providing broader institutional and regional cancer leadership, working with the School of Medicine, UT Health RGV , Cancer Center leadership, university leadership, and community partners to advance UTRGV’s cancer treatment, research, education, and innovation efforts.

The successful candidate will also provide clinical Radiation Oncology services. Clinical responsibilities will include outpatient radiation services and may include in-patient consultation. Academic responsibilities may include teaching residents/medical students in the outpatient clinical setting and in the classroom. Participation in scholarly activity, faculty development, patient safety and quality improvement initiatives, and other administrative and program committees are expected. Also, preparation and presentation of program didactics, grand rounds, and assisting with undergraduate medical education will be assigned at the Chair’s discretion. The successful candidate will develop a robust clinical/translational research program that advances the therapeutic paradigm.

Academic rank will be awarded commensurate with academic experience and credentials.

Minimum Qualifications

MD or DO from an accredited institution, Board Certified or Board Eligible in Radiation Oncology and licensed in the State of Texas. 5-10 years of academic, clinical and administrative experience experience.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

Successful completion of ACGME accredited residency training program in Radiation Oncology.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows.

Bilingual in English and Spanish

Regional or emerging reputation for the rank of associate professor or higher.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may

require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is

performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive

and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code

§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of

Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least

135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement

Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week

and at least 135 days in length.
