Job Title: Plant Operator

Job Description

The Plant Operator works under the guidance of a project manager or lead operator to operate and monitor process equipment and filtration systems used to treat industrial wastewater, sanitary wastewater, potable water, and drinking water. This role supports various treatment facilities, including those handling hazardous waste, and focuses on maintaining safe, efficient, and compliant plant operations. The position will require rotating shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, inspect, adjust, and monitor a wide range of process equipment and filtration systems used in water and wastewater treatment.

  • Record operational data from process control instruments, meters, gauges, and chemical metering systems on specified forms to ensure accurate documentation.

  • Detect and troubleshoot problems in air, water, and solids handling systems by closely monitoring equipment performance and process indicators.

  • Perform process calculations under direction to support proper equipment operation, including chemical dosage rates, biological loading, clarifier operation, and sludge generation rates.

  • Add process chemicals such as potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide, caustic, acid, chlorine, polymer, and coagulant using mixers, pumps, and metering devices in accordance with operating guidelines.

  • Conduct process control testing and field testing of water, soil, and air samples as required to verify treatment effectiveness and compliance.

  • Evaluate the physical characteristics of water and waste streams to support operational decisions and process adjustments.

  • Maintain consistent production quality by following established procedures and accurately completing work records and logs.

  • Perform preventive maintenance using hand tools, power tools, and precision equipment in accordance with operations and maintenance (O&M) guidelines.

  • Clean equipment, machinery, and buildings to maintain a safe, orderly, and efficient work area.

  • Respond to alarms and emergency situations at various facilities and systems in a timely and effective manner.

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with peers and supervisors through verbal and written updates and reports.

  • Understand and comply with all project and site safety requirements, maintain a strong personal safety record, and consistently use appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Work effectively as part of a small team, supporting colleagues and contributing to a collaborative, safety-focused environment.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in water filtration and/or water treatment operations.

  • Hands-on experience as a Water Treatment Operator, including operation of water plant and groundwater treatment systems.

  • Maintenance technician experience with the ability to perform mechanical and basic electrical maintenance on plant equipment.

  • Proficiency using hand tools, power tools, and precision equipment for preventive maintenance and repair tasks.

  • Ability to operate process equipment, meters, gauges, and chemical metering devices used in water and wastewater treatment.

  • Capability to perform process calculations involving chemical dosage rates, biological loading, clarifier operation, and sludge generation rates.

  • Strong understanding of safety procedures, including those related to hazardous waste site operations and the use of personal protective equipment.

  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, for data entry, reporting, and communication.

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic and algebra commonly used in the water treatment industry.

  • Ability to lift and carry materials weighing from 50 pounds up to more than 100 pounds.

  • Ability to work on feet for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks such as crouching, stooping, kneeling, shoveling, mowing, climbing, and extensive walking.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with team members and supervisors.

Work Environment

Work takes place at a water treatment plant within an industrial complex, with duties performed both inside the plant and in a job trailer, as well as outdoors in varying weather conditions. The team is small, with around ten people, fostering a collaborative and supportive atmosphere. The role involves regular use of process equipment, meters, gauges, chemical metering systems, and a variety of hand tools, power tools, and precision instruments. Work is physically demanding, requiring extended periods on your feet and activities such as crouching, stooping, kneeling, shoveling, mowing, climbing, and extensive walking. Appropriate work attire includes work pants and shirt, along with steel-toed boots, and the consistent use of personal protective equipment is required to maintain a safe working environmen

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Las Vegas, NV.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $30.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
