  • Risk Stratification: Assess surgical and medical risks based on patient comorbidities, age, and the specific procedure.

  • Diagnostic Testing: Order and interpret pre-operative diagnostics, including blood work, EKGs, chest X-rays, and advanced cardiac or pulmonary testing.

  • Medication Management: Conduct accurate pre-op medication reconciliations and provide clear instructions on which medications to hold or continue.

  • Medical Optimization: Manage and optimize chronic conditions (such as hypertension or diabetes) prior to surgery.

  • Specialty Consultations: Coordinate referrals or consults with anesthesia, cardiology, or other sub-specialties when complex issues arise.

  • Patient Education: Educate patients and families on pre-operative expectations, fasting guidelines, and preparation instructions.

Qualifications

  • Education (NP): Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited program and graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

  • Education (PA): Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree as a Physician Assistant from an ARC-PA approved program.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
