Full job description

Oracle DBA Lead - On-Premises to AWS Migration

Location : Remote

Applicants must be authorized to work in the US. Cognizant will not offer visa sponsorships now or anytime in the future.

The Oracle DBA Lead will be responsible for the complete database migration lifecycle, from source discovery through post-migration stabilization. The role is primarily focused on rehosting Oracle databases from on-premises infrastructure to AWS, while ensuring operational readiness, recoverability, performance, security, and supportability after cutover.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end migration of Oracle databases from on-premises environments to AWS, with the primary target pattern being rehost to Oracle Database on Amazon EC2.

  • Perform discovery and assessment of database versions, editions, operating systems, storage, interfaces, dependencies, database links, jobs, batch schedules, backup methods, security controls, and high-availability or disaster-recovery configurations.

  • Define the migration approach for each database, including prerequisites, target sizing, compatibility, outage requirements, data-transfer method, cutover sequence, rollback plan, validation criteria, and operational handover.

  • Build and configure Oracle database environments on AWS EC2, including software installation, database creation or restore, listener and network configuration, storage layout, parameter tuning, patch alignment, backup integration, monitoring, and access controls.

  • Execute schema and data migration using appropriate Oracle-native and enterprise tools such as RMAN, Data Pump, transportable tablespaces, Data Guard, or GoldenGate based on database size, platform compatibility, and downtime tolerance.

  • Plan and execute mock migrations, production cutovers, application connectivity changes, technical validation, reconciliation support, rollback readiness, and post-cutover stabilization.

  • Provide limited-duration post-go-live hypercare, including rapid triage, root-cause analysis, remediation, and resolution of issues identified after migration across availability, performance, connectivity, listener and TNS services, backups, storage growth, invalid objects, jobs, replication, patching, and application-reported database incidents.

  • Create and maintain assessment outputs, architecture inputs, migration runbooks, validation checklists, rollback procedures, SOPs, known-error records, and transition documentation.

  • Coordinate with application, AWS cloud, network, security, storage, backup, operating-system, and business teams throughout migration and stabilization.

  • Provide technical leadership for complex incidents, root-cause analysis, remediation planning, and knowledge transfer to steady-state support teams.

Mandatory Skills and Experience

  • 8+ years of hands-on Oracle DBA experience, including production support and database migration responsibilities.

  • Strong administration experience with Oracle 11g, 12c, 18c, 19c, and preferably 21c, across Windows, Linux / Unix environments.

  • Demonstrated experience migrating Oracle databases from on-premises infrastructure to AWS or another cloud environment; hands-on AWS rehost experience is strongly preferred.

  • Hands-on knowledge of Amazon EC2, EBS storage, VPC networking concepts, security groups, IAM integration points, AWS monitoring, and backup or recovery considerations relevant to Oracle workloads.

  • Hands-on Oracle RAC or clustered database experience. The current estate may include clustered configurations, so the ability to discover, assess, migrate, and troubleshoot RAC-related dependencies is valuable.

  • Experience with Oracle GoldenGate, cross-platform migrations, platform endian conversion, transportable tablespaces, and near-zero-downtime migration patterns.

  • Experience with Oracle Enterprise Manager and AWS monitoring or observability tools such as Amazon CloudWatch.

  • Expertise in Oracle installation, creation, upgrade, patching, cloning, backup and recovery, performance tuning, capacity management, security, and operational troubleshooting.

  • Hands-on experience with RMAN, Data Pump, restore and recovery validation, database consistency checks, and migration reconciliation support.

  • Experience designing and supporting high availability and disaster recovery using Oracle Data Guard; ability to assess existing configurations and recreate or adapt them on AWS.

  • Ability to diagnose complex Oracle issues using alert logs, trace files, AWR, ASH, ADDM, execution plans, wait events, and operating-system metrics.

  • Experience creating detailed migration plans, cutover runbooks, rollback procedures, validation checklists, RCA documents, and support SOPs.

  • Strong communication and stakeholder coordination skills, with the ability to work independently during assessment, migration, cutover, and hypercare activities.

  • Experience assessing and migrating Oracle environments hosted on physical servers, VMware, and engineered systems such as Exadata.

  • Experience supporting large-scale, wave-based migration programs involving multiple databases and application portfolios, including dependency mapping, migration factory execution, cutover coordination, validation, stabilization, and operational handover.

Preferred / Good-to-Have Skills

  • Familiarity with AWS Application Migration Service (MGN) and its use in server-level rehost planning for Oracle workloads, including coordination of database-consistent cutover activities.

  • Experience with discovery and migration assessment tools such as Oracle Enterprise Manager, AWS Migration Evaluator, AWS Migration Hub, or equivalent enterprise assessment tooling.

  • Knowledge of Exadata migrations, Oracle ASM, Multipath I/O, Linux administration, DNS, load balancers, firewalls, and enterprise backup products.

  • Automation experience using shell scripting, Python, Ansible, Terraform, or AWS Systems Manager.

  • Oracle certification and relevant AWS certification.

  • Administration and migration experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB, or other enterprise database platforms.

  • Experience supporting heterogeneous database estates and performing cross-platform discovery, dependency analysis, and migration planning during datacenter or cloud migration programs.

  • Knowledge of AWS managed database services, including Amazon RDS for Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, and SQL Server, and Amazon Aurora, even when the primary migration approach is rehost to Amazon EC2.

  • Experience with enterprise database monitoring and observability tools such as Oracle Enterprise Manager, Redgate, SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer, Dynatrace, Datadog, Splunk, or Amazon CloudWatch.

  • Experience supporting large-scale, wave-based database migration programs, including assessment, dependency mapping, migration factory execution, cutover coordination, validation, stabilization, and operational handover.

The salary range for this role is between $ 137,000 and $155,000 depending on skills and qualifications of the candidate. Applications will be accepted till 10/10/2026
