GENERAL SUMMARY:

The DME Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing respiratory treatment, education and support to patients in their homes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Consults with and assists physicians and other clinicians with respiratory care plan for patients and facilitates the implementation of physician orders.

  • Assesses patients and evaluates appropriateness and quality of respiratory care of individual patients for the purpose of making necessary modifications and adjustments of care plan and equipment use.

  • Communicates changes in the respiratory care plan with other healthcare team members as appropriate.

  • Provides effective education to patients/caregivers to ensure safe and efficacious use of home respiratory equipment

  • Participates in orientation of new staff members.

  • Performs home respiratory care procedures in accordance with evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, and departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

  • Maintains clinical and professional competency based upon established standards of practice according to the AARC.

  • Provide excellent customer services to every customer, every time. Communicating effectively with patients, their family members, colleagues, and guests.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be credentialed as a certified or registered respiratory therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care upon hire.

  • Must have an active license as a respiratory care practitioner in the State of Iowa upon hire. Must have or obtain an active license in each state services are provided in.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and provide proof of personal liability insurance.

  • Previous experience in home care preferred.

  • Must be BLS certified within 3 months of hire.

  • Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 3 years thereafter.

  • Must be able to organize, prioritize, and function in an environment with multiple stress factors.

  • Adaptability to performing under stress when confronted with emergent, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations, or situation in which working speed and sustained attention are vital aspects of the job.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to exercise professional judgment in dealing with patients, physicians, and other healthcare team members.

  • Must be able to use a computer for documentation and other relevant activities.
