Nondestructive Tester (Radiographer)

Summary

About the Position: This position performs radiographic and other nondestructive testing on munitions, ferrous and nonferrous materials, manufactured parts, and completed assemblies to determine functionality and acceptability; develop test procedures and train other radiographers.

Duties

• Operate various testing equipment to perform nondestructive tests on ammunition and ammunition components.
• Calculate equipment settings and tolerance to obtain desired/required special resolution, contrast, sensitivity and magnification.
• Perform trial exposures for technique development and evaluation of test.
• Perform radiographic and other nondestructive testing on ammunition, ammunition components and other explosives to determine functionality and acceptability.
• Develop identification system for tracking and marking material and identifying accept/reject determination.
• Develop test procedures and train other radiographers.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Nondestructive Tester (Radiographer) without more than normal supervision. Must possess the ability to perform common tasks such as experience using radiographic methods to inspect, accept and reject ammunition, explosives, and other components; experience making final decisions on acceptability of items; experience organizing and reporting testing results; and develop test procedures and train other radiographers. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Metals Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments PHYSICAL EFFORT: Duties involve walking, kneeling, standing, stooping, climbing, bending, lifting, and moving items weighing approximately 40 pounds. Work requires manual dexterity and careful attention during manual, visual, and muscular coordination when using instruments in performing inspections and functional tests. WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbent works inside ninety five percent of the time, depending on workload. May be assigned to second or third shift. Incumbent is subject to radiation from X-ray machines. Incumbent is also exposed to munitions, explosives, constant noise, dust, solvents, grease, and oils. Works around machinery with moving parts and around moving objects or vehicles. Work involves eyestrain during viewing of very small imperfections and examining indications of fractures.
