Full job description

This position is located at the Hershel "Woody" Williams VA Medical Center within Dental Service. The staff dentist is responsible for seeing patients in consultation in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Other duties include responding to patient telephone calls, informing patients of test/lab results, renewing medication prescriptions, giving telephone or e-mail advice to other providers, and administrative duties, as assigned. On-call responsibilities are shared among the dentists Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Dentist Basic Requirements A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. AND Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. AND Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with section A, chapter 3, paragraph 3g, this part.) Preferred Experience: Experience working with patients with multiple comorbidities within last 6 months DENTAL STAFF REQUIREMENTS Staff Dentist An individual that demonstrates the ability in the field of general dentistry or a dental specialty who is employed to perform the duties related to various professional activities of patient care and treatment without supervision. In addition to meeting the basic requirements, applicants must demonstrate ability in the general practice of dentistry; be capable of assisting in maintaining accepted standards of professional care in VA facilities; and be capable of accepting full responsibility for the proper care and treatment of assigned patients. Physical Requirements: Daily intermittent walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and carrying of lightweight items required. Major duties include but are not limited to the following: Responsible for entering accurate, complete, timely progress notes for each episode of care in the patient's electronic record. Responsible for the proper use, maintenance, and calibration of specialized equipment used in the assessment and care of patients. Adhere to safety, health, and infection control standards, regulations and work practices, as well as ergonomic standards. He/she reports any unsafe conditions to supervisory and/or appropriate officials. Assists in orientation of new staff, and will provide patient and family education, including informed consent which is documented according to corresponding VA policies. Assist with educating affiliated dental assistant and hygiene students. Maintain supplies, equipment and clinical areas to optimize safety and efficiency. The incumbent demonstrates knowledge and maintains standards in the use and reprocessing of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME). The staff dentist is expected to participate in performance improvement activities, disaster preparedness, administrative duties, and other responsibilities assigned by the Chief, Dental Service. Work Schedule: Part-time (16 hours per week), Wednesday and Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not Authorized Permanent Change of Station (PCS): Not Authorized Contract Buy Out Program: This position may be eligible for the Physician / Provider Contract Buy Out Program (CBOP), which authorizes VHA to buy out service contracts (Locum agreements, loan repayments, sign-on bonus contracts, Physician-owned practices) in exchange for employment at certain rural or highly rural facilities for a period of obligated service (minimum 4 years).
