Care Attendant

Provide dedicated one-on-one care and observation for patients identified as needing enhanced supervision to ensure safety, emotional well-being, and support throughout their hospital stay.

Purpose:

The Care Attendant provides direct patient care, observation, and companionship services under the direction of the RN or physician. This role supports patient safety, comfort, and recovery through continuous observation, assistance with daily activities, and maintaining a clean, safe care environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one observation and companionship for patients requiring enhanced supervision.

  • Assist with activities of daily living, including bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulation, transportation, and repositioning.

  • Monitor patient behavior and condition, reporting changes or concerns promptly to the RN.

  • Perform safety checks and help maintain a clean, organized patient environment.

  • Support fall prevention and assist with psychiatric and constant observation protocols.

  • Change bed linens, clean patient equipment, and restock patient care and unit supplies.

  • Deliver nourishments, fill water pitchers, and assist with other patient comfort needs.

  • Complete clerical, messenger, and supply-related duties as assigned.

  • Respond appropriately to emergent situations within the scope of the role.

  • Follow all patient care, infection prevention, safety, confidentiality, and bloodborne pathogen policies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Previous patient care experience preferred; candidates without prior patient care training must successfully complete the UPMC Care Attendant (Sitter) Training Program.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to effectively observe, engage with, and support patients while maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment.

  • Demonstrated compassion, professionalism, and ability to work collaboratively as part of a healthcare team.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal

  • Act 33 with renewal

  • Act 34 with renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

  • OAPSA
