THE POSITION

Would you like to play a key role in developing the accurate measurements that guide the roads and bridges you travel every day? Join the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) as a Transportation Technician and help support important surveying and mapping work across the state. This entry level position provides you with hands-on experience with the tools and technology used to guide future highway and bridge projects. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports survey teams that collect measurements used to plan roadway and bridge projects. The work involves operating instruments, reviewing data, and helping to prepare maps for engineering use. As a Transportation Technician, you will perform the following duties:

  • Survey Support:Assist in operating surveying instruments to collect measurements for transportation projects

  • Equipment Operation:Set up and adjust tools such as GPS receivers, electronic total stations, and data collectors

  • Data Processing:Use Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software to convert field information into maps and drawings

  • Field Calculation:Perform math and trigonometry computations to check measurements and locations

  • Record Keeping:Prepare and update field notes, sketches, and survey records for engineering use

  • Communication Duties:Coordinate with team members using hand signals, radios, and verbal communication

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position .

  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $41,506.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work ;or

  • One year of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics ;or

  • An equivalent combination of experience and training .
