About the Position: This position is located at the Naval Branch Health Clinic Belle Chasse, Dir of Medicine, Optometrist. Functions as a primary care provider for patients seeking ocular/vision care and is an essential member of the interdisciplinary military medical team. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation utilizing DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

• Utilize specific examinations and instruments to determine an individual's functional vision and specific visual abilities relating to acuity, depth perception, visual fields, contrast sensitivity, and color perception.
• Conduct comprehensive examinations and visual analyses to service members and eligible personnel, corrects visual anomalies, and improves functional inefficiencies by the use of lenses, prisms, or other ophthalmic devices.
• Determine the accommodative, refractive and binocular status of the eyes, and scope of visual function in general to determine the proper applications of lenses to accommodate.
• Perform duties in the area of behavioral and developmental optometry with responsibility to assess the performance of vision and how vision integrates with all of the other senses.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Basic Requirement for Optometrist: Degree: A Doctor of Optometry degree from an educational program that is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) at the time the degree was obtained. Licensure: Applicants must have received a passing score on the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) examinations and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice optometry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Experience: One year of specialized experience as an optometrist which includes examining patients, diagnosing visual disorders and/or diseases, and identifying treatment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). OR Residency: One year completion of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training.
