As a Respiratory Therapist at UPMC, you'll:

  • Deliver advanced respiratory care and life support to patients with cardiopulmonary conditions

  • Work in diverse settings including the OR, ED, Cath Lab, Recovery, and Transport

  • Perform specialized procedures such as bronchoscopy, ABG analysis, pulmonary function testing, EEG, EKG, and more

  • Respond to code situations and assist in transporting ventilated patients

  • Serve as a mentor and resource to students and fellow staff

  • Graduate of a CoARC-accredited Respiratory Therapy program

  • Current licensure and certifications as required

  • Strong clinical judgment and a passion for patient-centered car

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Osteopathic Respiratory Care OR Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP)

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)

  • Act 33 with renewal

  • Act 34 with renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

Education & Experience

  • Graduation from a CoARC‑accredited Respiratory Care program is required.

  • If you do not have an Associate's degree, you may qualify with:

  • 5-7 years of respiratory care experience, or

  • NBRC certification

  • A Bachelor's degree is preferred but not required.

  • A minimum of:

  • 2 years of total respiratory care experience, and

  • At least 1 year of critical care experience

Professional Development

  • Each year, team members complete one approved professional project as part of the annual performance review.

  • Your first project will be selected and approved within 3 months of hire.

Licensure & CertificationsCPR

  • AHA‑approved CPR certification (including both classroom/online learning and hands‑on skills) must be completed within 30 days of hire.

If Practicing in Pennsylvania

  • Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the NBRC

  • For those earning the RRT credential after July 1, 2002, ongoing maintenance of NBRC certification is required.
