Faculty / Philosophy

The University of Mary in Bismarck, ND invites applications for a full-time faculty position in the Department of Philosophy starting August 24, 2026.

Areas of Specialization and Competence are open, but an ability to bring Aristotelean and Thomistic philosophy into fruitful dialogue with other philosophical traditions is a distinct asset. Experience teaching bioethics would also be an asset. A Ph.D. in Philosophy is preferred by time of employment.

Applicants must excel in teaching and be committed to supporting formation outside of the classroom. Someone with an active research agenda would be an asset.

The teaching load is a 4/4 with the possibility of summer teaching for additional pay. This is a visiting position for one year but has the possibility of renewal.

All faculty are expected to demonstrate a willingness to support and advance the Christian, Catholic, and Benedictine mission and identity of the University of Mary (see https://www.umary.edu/about/mission-identity ).

Qualifications and Requirements Include:

  • Ph.D. in philosophy, preferred

  • Conversant in Aristotelian and Thomistic philosophy

  • Upholds and supports the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary

  • Supports the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities

  • Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the School of Arts and Sciences and throughout the university, in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that all be received as Christ
