Respiratory Therapist (NICU + Adults) - Santa Monica Hospital

Our Santa Monica Hospital is seeking to hire a Respiratory Therapist to join our Respiratory Therapy Department. You will deliver high-quality respiratory therapy services primarily for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients in Santa Monica, with additional coverage at various critical care areas, emergency department, and intensive care units across the health system as needed. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide patient and caregiver education on respiratory medications, airway clearance techniques (ACT), and the safe, effective use of durable medical equipment-including nebulizers, home ventilators, and CPAP/BiPAP devices-for both adult and pediatric populations.

• Maintain expertise in respiratory devices, ensuring proper usage and troubleshooting during clinical practice.

• Accurately generate and route pulmonary function reports using standardized documentation procedures and electronic health record systems.

• Support the calibration and maintenance of pulmonary function laboratory equipment and actively participate in performance improvement and quality assurance initiatives.

• Assist with clinic operations and contribute to the development and expansion of pulmonary programs, including potential involvement in research and quality improvement projects.

• Demonstrate flexibility in work assignments, including rotating clinic locations and workdays, and provide coverage across the health system as needed.

• Work under the general supervision of designated leadership, which may include the Respiratory Therapy Directors, Clinic Manager, Pediatric Pulmonary Clinic Manager, Relief Pulmonary Clinic Supervisor (RCP II), or Pulmonary Function Lab Manager, depending on assignment.

• Perform additional duties as assigned to support patient care and departmental objectives

Salary Range: $48.53/hr - $64.03/hrQualifications

Educational Requirements:

• Associate degree in Respiratory Therapy or similar - Required

• Bachelor's Degree in Respiratory Therapy or similar - Preferred

Licenses/Certifications:

• RCP State License-in the state of California - Required

• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) - Required

• CPR: American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) - Required

• Pediatrics Advanced Life Support (PALS) - Required

• NRP - Required for NICU

• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - Preferred

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

• Minimum 2 years of NICU experience

• Experience with high frequency neonates, either the HFOV or HFJV

• Previous experience intubating neonates within the last year

• Competent using the oscillator and nitric oxide on neonates

• Ability to work in Adults and PEDs

• Demonstrated knowledge and skill in all theories and practices of current Respiratory Therapy

• Skill in organizing work efficiently.

• Ability to determine appropriate modes of care when provided with a care plan by physician.

• Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and co-workers. Listen perceptively to instructions or information.

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written form.

• Skill in set-up, monitoring, and troubleshooting all Respiratory Equipment.

• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with personnel and ancillary medical personnel.

• Ability to interact humanistically and professionally with a diverse group of patients, visitors, co-workers, and other medical center staff as part of a team.

• Skill in setting priorities, which accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities. Working independently with minimal direction to achieve optimal results.

• Ability to perform more than one task simultaneously and respond positively to temporary changes in work schedule.

• Ability to provide excellent service, promote customer satisfaction, provide quality care, and create a positive, progressive, and friendly environment throughout the entire UCLA Healthcare Community, while maintaining the confidentiality of patients, and their families at all times (i.e., during and after work).

• Ability to perform the following activities using proper body mechanics.

• Stand and or walk 75% of the 12-hour work day.

• Sit, push, kneel, crouch and reach for extended periods of time

• Transfer a patient weighing a minimum of 100 lbs. using equipment or with assistance.

• Lift, push, pull, and carry a minimum of 35 lbs.
