GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

The Assistant Director of Student Engagement and Inclusion serves as a key leader within the Office of Student Engagement & Inclusion and acts as a primary partner to the Director in advancing a comprehensive, student-centered co-curricular experience. This role provides strategic oversight, supervision, and coordination of major functional areas including student programming, leadership development, student organizations, and DEI initiatives. Under the leadership and direction of the Director, the Assistant Director supports the management and execution of all functional areas within the office and carries out responsibilities as assigned by the Director. The Assistant Director independently manages assigned responsibilities and initiatives under the guidance of the Director, who has overall oversight and accountability for all office functions.

The Assistant Director plays a critical role in shaping campus climate and student engagement efforts by designing, implementing, and assessing programs that support student success, belonging, and retention. This position also serves as a key decision-maker in the Director's absence and contributes to divisional planning, cross-campus collaboration, and continuous improvement efforts aligned with institutional priorities.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Programming & Student Engagement

  • Strategic Program Development and Implementation

  • Provide leadership in the planning, execution, and assessment of comprehensive, inclusive student engagement programming that supports institutional goals and student success outcomes

  • Develop long-range programming plans and calendars to ensure diverse, equitable, and high-impact engagement opportunities

  • Utilize assessment data and student feedback to continuously improve programming effectiveness

  • Clubs and Organizations Oversight

  • Provide oversight and strategic direction for all student clubs and organizations

  • Interpret, develop, and enforce policies and procedures related to student organization operations

  • Design and facilitate advisor training and development initiatives

  • Monitor compliance, risk management, and organizational accountability

  • Oversee financial processes, including budget allocations, spending, and audits

  • Foster inter-organizational collaboration and campus-wide engagement initiatives

  • SEI Campus Wide Events

  • Co-Lead the planning and execution of large-scale, high-impact institutional programs including Orientation, Commencement, Welcome Week, Club Fair, Banquets, and campus traditions

  • Serve as project manager for major events, coordinating logistics, staffing, budgets, and marketing

  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders to enhance reach, participation, and student experience

  • Leadership Development Programs

  • Provide oversight and co-advising of key leadership organizations including SGA, CAB, and NSLS

  • Develop comprehensive leadership curricula, training, and experiential learning opportunities

  • Manage recruitment strategies, membership engagement, and leadership pipelines

  • Mentor student leaders and support governance, decision-making, and organizational effectiveness

B. Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Initiatives

  • DEI Strategy & Programming Leadership

  • Lead the development and implementation of innovative DEI programming, training, and awareness campaigns

  • Align initiatives with institutional strategic goals related to equity and inclusion

  • Campus Climate & Professional Development

  • Assess campus climate and identify opportunities for growth in inclusion and belonging

  • Work collaboratively to implement faculty/staff training and professional development opportunities

  • Serve as an active member of the Inclusive Excellence Committee

  • Collaborate with the Chief Diversity Officer, Title IX Coordinator, Dean of Students, and Residence Life on institutional initiatives and policy development

  • Community Engagement & Partnerships

  • Establish and maintain partnerships with community organizations to enhance resources and support for diverse student populations.

  • Represent the college in external DEI related initiatives and networks

C. Operational & Administrative Support

  • Staff Supervision & Workforce Management

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate a large team of student employees

  • Provide leadership development and performance management for student staff

  • Oversee daily operations, scheduling, and service delivery across functional areas

  • Student Food Pantry Operations (Program Oversight)

  • Provide comprehensive leadership of the GCC Student Food Pantry as a critical student support resource

  • Manage operations, compliance, partnerships, and sustainability efforts

  • Oversee budgeting, grant management, reporting, and program assessment

  • Lead campus outreach and awareness initiatives related to food insecurity

  • Communications & Marketing Strategy

  • Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive communication and marketing strategy for SE&I

  • Oversee digital presence, branding, and messaging across all platforms

  • Ensure accessibility, inclusivity, and consistency in all communications

  • Budget & Resource Management

  • Manage multiple budget lines and funding sources with a high level of accountability

  • Lead budget planning, forecasting, and fiscal reporting

  • Ensure alignment of financial decisions with departmental and institutional priorities

  • Campus Partnerships & Facility Coordination

  • Serve as liaison to Campus Centers and other campus units

  • Coordinate shared programming, resource allocation, and collaborative initiatives

  • Support operational excellence in student-facing facilities and services

  • Oversee office operations and student services including ID cards, lockers, calendars, and resource coordination

  • Transportation & Risk Management

  • Oversee and ensure safe transportation practices for student activities

  • Maintain compliance with institutional policies and safety protocols

D. Collaboration & Leadership

  • Serve as the primary designee and second-in-command in the absence of the Director, providing leadership, decision-making, and operational continuity

  • Supervise and mentor professional and student staff, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and excellence

  • Contribute to divisional strategic planning, assessment efforts, and policy development

  • Represent the Office of Student Engagement & Inclusion on institutional committees and initiatives

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of SEI

Job Requirements:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree or Associate's degree in a related field required

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of three years of experience (or five with an Associate's Degree) in Student Affairs/Campus Life or related area at the college level is required. Progressive experience with program development, large-scale event planning, student leadership development, and assessment of student engagement initiatives is strongly preferred. Demonstrated professional experience in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) initiatives, including programmatic and organizational impact.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media products required. Excellent written, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to deal effectively with students and parents. Must be a friendly, enthusiastic team player with a strong work ethic and positive attitude. Individual must be self-motivated with the capacity to independently organize their work to achieve specific objectives. Must be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of diverse issues and demonstrate sensitivity to diversity. Possession of a valid NY State driver's license is required. Occasional evening and weekend availability required.

Additional Information:

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Director of SE&I. This position works collaboratively with the Assistant Vice President of Student Engagement and Inclusion, Director of Resident Life & Learning, the Title IX coordinator, the Dean of Students, and the Vice President for Student Affairs & Chief Diversity Officer.

SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a full-time position and is compensated at $48,012.99. As of 9/1/26, compensation is $49,454.25. Salary, benefits and conditions of employment are as set by the GEA contract. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.
