Job Summary: The Software Engineering Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day supervision, technical development, and work quality of a team of approximately 5-8 Software Engineers. This position assigns engineering work, reviews and quality-checks software deliverables, supports project execution, teaches and coaches engineers, develops new engineering talent, and ensures that software engineering activities are completed accurately, consistently, and in alignment with company standards and project requirements.

This role combines technical leadership with direct people supervision and serves as the primary point of coordination between Software Engineers, Project Managers, field teams, operations leadership, and customers when software engineering support is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Directly supervise, coordinate, and manage the day-to-day activities of a team of approximately 5-8 Software Engineers.

  • Assign projects, tasks, and priorities to Software Engineers based on project requirements, workload, schedule, engineer skill level, and development needs.

  • Review, quality-check, and approve software engineering work products, including controls databases, graphics, programming, integrations, sequences of operation implementation, documentation, commissioning support materials, and system backups.

  • Provide technical direction and support for the development of specialized software required for complete integrated building automation systems, energy management systems, and related customer solutions.

  • Ensure software work is completed in accordance with project specifications, design intent, applicable standards, customer requirements, and company quality expectations.

  • Coach, teach, and mentor Software Engineers through regular feedback, technical training, project reviews, and hands-on support.

  • Develop new engineers by creating learning plans, assigning appropriate work, reviewing progress, and helping them build technical, troubleshooting, documentation, and customer-facing skills.

  • Support Level I and Level II Software Engineers by providing timely supervision, reviewing communication, monitoring progress, and ensuring questions or issues are resolved quickly.

  • Serve as an escalation point for complex programming, graphics, integration, networking, commissioning, or operational issues.

  • Monitor project schedules, engineering deliverables, and resource availability; communicate resource constraints or project risks to management as needed.

  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Design Specialists, Operations Managers, field technicians, commissioning teams, service teams, and sales teams to support accurate estimating, design, installation, startup, commissioning, training, and project closeout.

  • Support installation and startup personnel with adjustments to software as required during static and dynamic startup and commissioning activities.

  • Provide information and support for other contractors on project sites when required to resolve coordination or operating issues.

  • Promote consistency in software engineering standards, naming conventions, graphics standards, documentation, backups, and project turnover requirements.

  • Verify that proper backups, as-builts, facility performance software, and project documentation are in place before transition from Operations to Service.

  • Participate in customer or internal meetings when technical leadership, project recovery support, or supervisory input is required.

  • Complete and review timesheets, project updates, service work orders, and other paperwork required for the position in an accurate and timely manner.

  • Identify recurring technical or quality issues and recommend training, process improvements, or corrective actions.

  • Support recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, performance feedback, and development planning for Software Engineers as requested by management.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Duties:

In accordance with applicable Company policies/procedures and Federal/State laws, will perform the following supervisory responsibilities: planning, assigning, and directing work; coaching and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, HVAC Controls Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline; or equivalent related work experience as determined by local management.

  • Minimum of 5 years of related software engineering, building automation, controls programming, systems integration, or HVAC controls experience preferred.

  • Ability to work independently with little to no supervision and to lead others in completing work accurately, safely, and on schedule.

  • Strong understanding of HVAC system operations and mechanical and electrical systems within a facility.

  • Deep understanding of DDC or special systems that control buildings, including programming, graphics, integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting practices.

  • Understanding of computer operating systems, MS Office Suite, ACAD or similar software, networking concepts, and common controls software tools.

  • Experience configuring, debugging, and troubleshooting computer, networking, programming, and building automation system issues.

  • Ability to read and interpret project specifications, sequences of operation, mechanical drawings, electrical diagrams, and electronic control documentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work with electronic equipment such as volt meters, amp meters, oscilloscopes, and similar troubleshooting tools.

  • Working understanding of AC power circuitry including breakers, multi-phase power, and circuits 120VAC and greater.

  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to give feedback, explain technical concepts, and communicate expectations to engineers and project teams.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple engineers, projects, deadlines, and priorities at the same time.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach, coach, mentor, and develop technical employees.

  • Strong awareness of company culture, customer expectations, and the industry environment in which the team works.

  • Ability to understand the issues and perceptions of others and to work through them professionally to achieve successful outcomes, customer satisfaction, and employee development.

  • Prior technical leadership, training, mentoring, project coordination, or supervisory experience preferred.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, climb, walk, sit, push, pull, squat, crawl, and stoop. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel objects, and type on keyboard; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The use of power tools will be required to effectively perform this position. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and may be required to work at heights over 1.8m.

In general, the following conditions of the work environment are representative of those that an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, work on job sites, may be required to travel to and from job site locations, may work in a typical office environment, and is occasionally exposed to construction equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Confined space entry may be required. High work may be required.

Additional Information:

  • Compensation: $125,000-175,000 (DOE)

  • Working Hours: This position generally works Monday- Friday, overtime and on call when necessary

  • Travel Requirements: Some travel to New York City and New Jersey as needed.

Pay Range

$125,000.00 - $175,000.00
