Job Description

  1. Direct observations of routine patient test performance, including, as applicable, patient identification and preparation; and specimen collection handling, processing and testing.

  2. Monitoring the recording and reporting of test results, including, as applicable, reporting critical results.

  3. Review of intermediate test results or worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing results, and preventive maintenance records.

  4. Direct observation of performance of instrument maintenance and function checks.

  5. Assessment of test performance through testing previously analyzed specimens, internal blind testing samples or external proficiency testing samples.

  6. Evaluation of problem-solving skills.

  7. Performs quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of test results.

  8. Analyzes patient samples according to approved standards of testing.

  9. Maintains equipment to ensure accurate, consistent results in the performance of tests.

  10. Provides teaching and education to clinical laboratory scientist students and other laboratory personnel.

  11. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Collects and processes laboratory specimens.

  12. Follow standards of safety dictated by the laboratory, the hospital and regulatory agencies.

  13. Contributes to the efficient operation of the laboratory.

  14. Participates in continuing education programs for the upgrade of educational experience.

  15. Other job duties as assigned by management.

  16. Process specimens and perform procedures in accordance with the Section Standard Operating Procedure manual accurately and completed, and do so within an appropriate timeframe, in an organized and efficient manner.

  17. Perform quality control, preventative maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of instruments, with the added responsibility of ensuring that these tasks are performed and documented by all personnel assigned to such tasks, and taking appropriate action as needed. A further responsibility is the preparation of QC reports for supervisory and pathologist review, and ensuring that records are complete and accurate, to meet any and all regulatory agency requirements.

  18. Participate in any and all continuing education activities as they become available, and share knowledge gained with superiors and coworkers, for the purpose of improvement of Section instrumentation and procedures.

  19. Assist in purchasing duties, and supply inventory.

  20. Follow established safety procedures, and be familiar with fire and disaster response.

  21. Evaluate and recommend new instrumentation and/or testing procedures for their specific area of expertise.

  22. Act as “group leader” by assisting and directing other staff in work duties as needed, and ensuring smooth workflow.

  23. Participates in opportunities for continuing education and/or testing, training according to the Section Performance Standards to enhance technical skills.

  24. Prepare and present reports as needed and attend required meetings. Multiple positions.
