Somatus is seeking an experienced Tax Director to lead company’s tax function in support of a rapidly growing healthcare organization. This role will oversee income tax, state and local tax, indirect tax, tax provision support, and tax compliance matters, while helping build the processes, controls, and documentation required for a high-growth environment and future public-company readiness.

This role will serve as both a strategic leader and a hands-on operator, partnering closely with Accounting, Finance, Legal, HR, and external advisors to assess tax implications of business initiatives, support corporate transactions and legal entity matters, and maintain a strong control environment. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical tax expertise, sound judgment, strong project management skills, and the ability to translate complex tax issues into practical recommendations for senior leadership.

A successful candidate will be comfortable operating across both strategy and execution — from advising on tax risk, planning, and governance matters to managing filings, audits, provision support, and documentation. This is a key leadership role for a company focused on operational excellence, scalable infrastructure, and disciplined growth.

  • Lead Somatus’ overall tax function, including direct tax, state and local tax, indirect tax, tax planning, and tax compliance.
  • Own the coordination of federal, state, and local income tax filings and related compliance processes in partnership with external advisors.
  • Support quarterly and annual tax provision processes, including documentation, analysis, and coordination with the accounting team and external advisors under ASC 740.
  • Monitor and assess state and local tax exposure, nexus considerations, sales and use tax matters, and other indirect tax requirements relevant to Somatus’ operations.
  • Partner with Accounting, Legal, HR, and Finance to evaluate the tax implications of contracts, new business initiatives, legal entity structures, and operational changes.
  • Provide tax support for corporate transactions, restructuring initiatives, intercompany matters, and other strategic projects as the company continues to scale.
  • Manage tax audits, notices, and inquiries from taxing authorities, ensuring timely responses, strong documentation, and appropriate issue resolution.
  • Develop and maintain tax policies, processes, controls, and supporting documentation to improve scalability, transparency, and readiness for future public-company requirements.
  • Partner with external auditors on tax-related matters and support audit requests, technical analyses, and control documentation.
  • Coordinate and manage external tax advisors to ensure high-quality deliverables, practical recommendations, and alignment with Somatus’ business priorities.
  • Monitor changes in tax law and healthcare-related regulatory developments and evaluate their impact on the company’s structure, contracts, and operations.
  • Support executive leadership with tax insights, risk assessments, and decision support related to growth initiatives, compliance matters, and governance.
  • Operate effectively at both the strategic and tactical levels, including hands-on management of analyses, reconciliations, workpapers, and filing support when needed. How You'll Strengthen Our Team:

Required:

  • 10+ years of progressive tax experience, including a combination of public accounting and in-house corporate tax leadership experience.

  • Strong technical knowledge of U.S. federal and state income tax, state and local tax, and indirect tax matters.

  • Experience supporting tax provision processes and working knowledge of ASC 740.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage external tax advisors, auditors, and cross-functional stakeholders effectively.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex issues and translate them into practical business guidance.

  • Experience building or improving tax processes, controls, and documentation in a growing organization.

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize competing demands, and execute with a high degree of ownership in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with senior leadership and non-tax business partners.

  • High attention to detail and a strong commitment to accuracy, documentation quality, and operational follow-through.

  • CPA required; MST, JD, or other advanced tax credential preferred. Preferred:

  • Experience in healthcare, managed care, value-based care, or other highly regulated service environments.

  • Experience supporting IPO readiness, public-company preparedness, or SOX-oriented control environments.

  • Experience with legal entity rationalization, intercompany matters, and tax support for complex organizational structures.

  • Familiarity with tax considerations related to healthcare contracts, vendor arrangements, and multi-state operations.

  • Experience with NetSuite or similar ERP systems and technology-enabled tax processes.

  • Background in a high-growth private equity- or venture-backed company environment.

  • Big Four or national public accounting firm experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

  • Experience with ERP systems (NetSuite preferred).

  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, XLOOKUP, data analysis); ability to work with large data sets

  • High intellectual curiosity and ability to think critically beyond transactional processing.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to meet communicated and expected deadlines

  • Able to leverage the work of others and add value, absorbing feedback, and carrying a task to competition

  • Effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams, business partners, leadership, co-workers, clients, and others courteously and professionally.

  • Ability to delegate, develop teammates, and expand the capacity of the team Compensation
