Job Title: HVAC Technician Job Description

The HVAC Technician supports the Refrigeration Shop by performing planned maintenance, repairs, and project work on commercial and residential HVAC systems and a wide range of refrigeration equipment across multiple properties. You will work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing to the reliability and efficiency of building systems. This role follows a Monday through Friday schedule from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with participation in a rotating on‑call schedule as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform planned maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on commercial and residential HVAC systems and refrigeration equipment.

  • Install, repair, and replace chillers, central air systems, window air conditioners, and other refrigeration equipment.

  • Adjust or replace worn or defective mechanisms and parts, and reassemble repaired systems to ensure proper operation.

  • Dismantle malfunctioning systems and test components using electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic testing equipment to diagnose issues accurately.

  • Work collaboratively with heat mechanics to maintain, service, and repair HVAC equipment and boiler systems, including water treatment components.

  • Service, repair, and rebuild pumps and compressors to support reliable mechanical system performance.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC, refrigeration, boiler, and chiller systems to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.

  • Respond to service calls across campus and prioritize work based on urgency and system impact.

  • Document work performed, including maintenance activities, repairs, and parts used, in accordance with established procedures.

  • Follow safety protocols and best practices when working with electrical systems, refrigerants, and mechanical equipment.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of commercial or industrial HVAC service and troubleshooting experience.

  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting HVAC systems in commercial or industrial settings.

  • Strong hands-on experience with refrigeration systems and equipment.

  • Proficiency in HVAC service, repair, and mechanical troubleshooting.

  • Experience working with chillers, boilers, central air systems, window air conditioners, and refrigeration equipment.

  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance on HVAC, refrigeration, boiler, and chiller systems.

  • Knowledge of electrical principles and safe practices related to HVAC and refrigeration equipment.

  • Experience servicing, repairing, and rebuilding pumps and compressors.

  • Capability to use electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic testing equipment to diagnose system issues.

  • EPA Universal or EPA 608 Certification (or equivalent refrigerant handling certification).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Broad understanding of commercial and residential HVAC systems and their components.

  • Familiarity with boiler systems and water treatment processes.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work with a variety of tools and testing equipment.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team with other trades.

  • Effective problem-solving skills and attention to detail when diagnosing and repairing systems.

  • Willingness to participate in a rotating on‑call schedule as needed.

  • Physical ability to bend, squat, lift, and work in smaller or confined spaces.

Work Environment

This role is campus-based and involves responding to HVAC and refrigeration maintenance needs across multiple buildings. You will use a range of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic testing equipment, along with standard HVAC tools, while following safety procedures in active building and plant environments. The regular schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with occasional on‑call duties as part of a rotating schedule.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $34.84 - $38.00/hr.
