How you make a difference

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides a full range of psychiatric services to incarcerated patients in accordance with state licensure, collaborative practice requirements, and established policies and procedures. This role delivers direct psychiatric care, clinical consultation, and follow-up services to support patient treatment and continuity of care. The position works closely with mental health, medical, and administrative teams to ensure consistent and compliant psychiatric services. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner also seeks clinical consultation and supervision as required by collaborative practice protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide psychiatric evaluations, treatment, follow-up care, and medication management within professional and regulatory standards.

  • Monitor effectiveness and side effects of psychotropic medications and provide ongoing patient education and informed consent.

  • Collaborate with mental health, medical, and administrative teams to ensure coordinated and consistent psychiatric services.

  • Complete timely, accurate clinical documentation and participate in required meetings, consultations, and on-call coverage.

  • Support crisis intervention, referrals, transfers, and emergency or involuntary treatment processes as allowed by scope of practice and guidelines.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Master in Science of Nursing or Post-Master’s Certificate from an accredited nurse practitioner program with a specialty in psychiatric mental health across the lifespan.

Experience

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience as a PMHNP required, or may be waived if approved by Vice President of Advanced Practice Program.

  • Corrections experience in a PMHNP role preferred.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Unrestricted current license to practice as a PMHNP in the state of practice.

  • Current board certification as a PMHNP.

  • Current DEA Registration (unless Chief Psychiatric Officer determines it as optional).

  • Current BLS certification.
