The Position

Position Summary

The City of Carlsbad Learn Through Play Program is seeking a Part-Time Learn Through Play Instructor to lead classroom activities and guide Aides in providing a developmentally appropriate learning environment for children ages 3–5. This position will teach a class that is held at Kruger House Holiday Park.

Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, & Friday, 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (approx. 15–20 hours/week).

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Lead and supervise all daily classroom activities, ensuring smooth and developmentally appropriate instruction

  • Design, plan, and implement structured lessons including art, music, science, language development, and movement

  • Guide, mentor, and direct Aides and classroom volunteers, ensuring proper support for all activities

  • Supervise and ensure safety during indoor classroom activities, outdoor play, and field trips

  • Establish and maintain a positive, engaging, and well-managed learning environment

  • Oversee classroom setup and cleanup, ensuring an organized and inviting learning space

  • Maintain accurate classroom records and assist with communication to families when appropriate

  • Support curriculum development and preparation of classroom materials

  • Model effective behavior management strategies and reinforce positive behaviors

  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and ensure adherence to safety procedures

Qualifications

Qualifications may include:

  • Leadership skills and ability to guide classroom activities

  • Ability to relate positively to young children

  • Strong communication skills

  • Patience, flexibility, and professionalism

  • Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to emergencies

Experience & Education

Education:

  • Coursework in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or related field preferred

  • One year or more of experience in an early childhood or preschool setting preferred

  • Experience planning or leading classroom activities is highly desirable

Special Requirements

Must be 18 years or older

Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification

Must meet State of California TB requirements

Valid CA Driver’s License (preferred)

Must attend required trainings and meetings

Must provide own transportation

Must wear standard department-issued apparel

Physical Requirements

  • Sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, and reach

  • Lift and carry 25 lbs or more

  • Work indoors and outdoors

  • Travel to different program sites as needed

*Part-time employee cannot exceed 980 total hours worked within one fiscal year.

**This is a part-time, non-benefited position
